1560. Gently read. Near fine. Limited Edition. Number 3 of 160. The magnificent first edition of Khunrath's Amphitheatrum has always belonged to the rarest and most coveted books of Paracelsian theology, Christian Kabbalah, magic and alchemy. The reproductions of the artistically arranged texts and text images are preceded by a critical and historical study of Khunrath (ca. 1560-1605) as an important mystic of nature and the impact of his Amphitheatrum. The edition also provides a transcript and translation of the texts witin the images, an introduction to Khunrath's iconographical program as well as an extensive bibliography of his works. These are succeeded by a complete reprint of the Hanau edition (1609), with its own unique augmentation and design, including illustrations of the engravings added since the Hamburg edition. The edition also contains a reprint of Johann Arndt's Iudicium uber die 4 Figuren and a transcript of a mid-18th century German translation (based on the 1609 Hanau version), supplemented by a substantial introduction analyzing Khunrath's theosophy within the context of 18th-century piety and enlightenment. A double concordance as well as a detailed name index complete the edition. Large & heavy.

A Lyon: Par Barthelemy Molin, 1560. Fine. Par Barthelemy Molin, A Lyon 1560, 416pp. (7), relié. - Missing slip 75. Sheet 263, 265 coming off. Marcus Antonius Coccius Sabellicus, Celio Curione
Basileae: Johannes Hervagius (Joannem Hervagium), 1560. See pictures. Vintage patina, with a pleasing look of history. Bindings are well worn, with edge wear, corner bumps, rubbing, chipping at spine ends, etc.. Volume one has some pealing of the leather (in pictures). Some hinges cracked, a few joints starting. All volumes have some toning, occasional spots/dog ear/foxing, occasional worming in bottom margin, and name/date on the title page/at the colophon and etc.. V.1 - Ex libris ticket on pastedown, also bookseller notes on pastedown and flyleaf. Inkspot on the title page, 3 cm, and another 1 cm that has turned into a hole. Several fore-edge chip repairs. V. 2 - shared condition notes, nothing exceptional to it. V. 3 Title page has some creasing. All volumes have a very occasional underline and marginal note; there are not many, most only correcting the Latin. Despite the condition notes, these books present themselves well and add presence to a shelf with their tall classically decorated spines. The recognized first edition of the collected works of Marcus Antonius Coccius Sabellicus, edited by Celio Secondo Curione, complete in four books (bound in three volumes), with the provenance stamp of the Count de Ega decorating each board (and more provenance within). An earlier "opera" (1538) was published, but lacked much of Sabellicus' work. The noted scholar Celio Secondo Curione gathered, and edited this work, published in Basel, Switzerland, at the printing house of Hervagius. Antonii Coccii Sabellici. Edited by Celio Secondo Curione.
Joannem Hervagium (Johannes Hervagius), Basel (Basileae), 1560. About Sabellicus - Sabellicus (1436-1506) was a scholar and historian of Venice, best known for his universal history, Enneades sive Rhapsodia historiarum. Early in his career he wrote a history of Venice, which led to him being given a teaching position in the city. In 1487 he was appointed curator of the Biblioteca Marciana (National Library of St. Mark) and began preparing for the eventual historic library building next to the Doge's Palace. About Curione - A well-regarded grammarian, editor, historian and humanist who spent many years exiled from Italy in Switzerland (Basel). Provenance - Antonio Lomelino de Vasconcelos placed his name and date (1759) on many of the title pages, colophons, etc. throughout the three volumes. He was a scholar, who became the Regius Professor of Latin Grammar in 1771 (which probably explains why most the notes correct Latin words). "(He) is said to have been a curious and diligent bibliophile. This important bookstore later passed to the Count of Ega, Aires de Saldanha, and by the sequestration t … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Venedig, Ferrando Bertelli, um 1560). Kupferstichkarte dem Ferrando Bertelli zugeschrieben. Bifolco/Ronca (2018) Taf. 495. Meurer, Strabo 35 (Ausgabe 1565): "The archetype was engraved by Domenico Zenoi and published in 1553 by Donato Bertelli. Models and sources of the rather superficious and crude map image are difficult to trace. There is a certain affilation to wall-maps of Austria (1545, original lost) and Hungary (1556) by Wolfgang lazius". Paris: Jacob Kerver, 1560. PRESENTING A TRULY RARE 16TH CENTURY LOUVAIN HOLY BIBLE, PRINTED BY THE FAMOUS KERVER FAMILY OF PARIS, AND FILLED WITH BREATHTAKING WOODCUT ILLUSTRATIONS AFTER HANS HOLBEIN, THE FAMED ENGRAVER OF THE LEGENDARY DANCE OF DEATH! ---O0O--- Biblia Sacra Veteris et Noui testamenti iuxta vulgatam aeditionem. Cum quibusdam anotationibus Ioannis Benedicti Parisiensis theologi. Parisiis : Apud Iacobum Keruer, sub signo vnicorne, in via Iacobea, 1560. This is truly a gem! At the time of the Council of Trent, when the Vulgate was declared to be authentic, there existed no authorized edition of the Vulgate. The editions produced by the Protestant Stephanus (Estienne) were condemned by Roman scholars. Thus the Louvain Bible was produced in 1547 and was accepted as standard until the Sixtine Bible of 1590 appeared. This is a great example of a Louvain Biblia; profusely illustrated with many woodcuts after the legendary Has Holbein, also including illuminated initials and the famous Kerver unicorn to the title. The present specimen is new edition of the Vulgate originally issued by Yolande Bonhomme in 1551; a recomposition printed by Jacques Kerver with commentary by Jean Benoit, including his 4 indices: "Hebraicorum nominum Interpretation", "Index rerum and sententiarum", "Index selectarum annotationum", and "Insignium locorum ... descriptio." The N.T. has a separate title page and foliation. Contains 105 vignettes engraved on metal, imitating the woodcuts of Hans Holbein. 1560. Title in red and black, ornamental initial ?N?, 12 panel woodcuts to Calendar, over 120 half-page woodcuts (including repeats). 8vo. [24], 367ff [1]f (blank), [9]ff. Contemporary blind tooled calf over bevelled wooden boards, top section of upper cover lettered on three lines ?HINRICVS ET/ HIERONYMVS/ WITZENDORFF, beneath an ornate medallion and foliage border roll on four sides enclosing the date ?1562? and a panel of palmette ornamental roll, lower cover with full panel of the same border and central rolls, paper label at head of spine, claspc and catches in tact (headcaps chipped). The binding bears the name of Heinrich and Hieronymus Witzendorff and the date 1562. Other books from the library are recorded on EBDB (Einbanddatenbank ? Josephus
Sigismundi Feyerabendt, Frankfurt, 1560. A handsome 1580 folio edition of Josephus' Opera (Works), including a full page Jost Amman woodcut, and many other woodcuts illustrating Israel's history. Josephus is celebrated for mentioning Jesus in his works, as he wrote them shortly after Jesus' ministry. This collection of works includes Josephus' Antiquitatibus Judaicis (Jewish Antiquities), De Bello Judaico (The Jewish War), Contra Apionem (Against Apion), and other lesser known works. About the Author & Work - Titus Flavius Josephus was a first-century Romano-Jewish historian who was born in Jerusalem to a father of priestly descent and a mother who claimed royal ancestry. He initially fought against the Romans during the First Jewish–Roman War as head of Jewish forces in Galilee, until surrendering in 67 CE to Roman forces led by Vespasian. Josephus claimed the Jewish Messianic prophecies that initiated the First Roman-Jewish War made reference to Vespasian becoming Emperor of Rome. In response Vespasian decided to keep Josephus as a slave. After Vespasian became Emperor in 69 CE, he granted Josephus his freedom, at which time Josephus assumed the emperor's family name of Flavius. Josephus defected to the Roman side and was granted Roman citizenship. He became an advisor and friend of Vespasian's son Titus, serving as his translator when Titus led the Siege of Jerusalem. Since the siege proved ineffective at stopping the Jewish revolt, the city's destruction and the looting and destruction of Herod's Temple (Second Temple) followed. Josephus recorded Jewish history, with em … [Click Below for Full Description]

COUSTAU
[Click Below for Full Description]

[MAURITS, Prince of Orange].
Atlas van Stolk 1560; Muller, Historieplaten 1479. Popular allegorical print on the failed attempt to assassinate Maurits of Nassau, Prince of Orange, in 1623. The portraits of the conspirators, who were all Arminians, are displayed on a decapitated snake. The body of the dead snake encircles two trees, the felled tree of Arminianism, with Deceit cleaving to its trunk, and the Orange tree flanked by Religion and Justice and protected by divine light. At the left in the picture, the heads of the conspirators are displayed on pikes around the gallows.A heated theological and political conflict had raged in the Low Countries between the Arminians (from 1610 also called Remonstrants) and Gomarists for more than a decade when it came to a head with the Synod of Dort (1618/19), which decided in favour of the Gomarists. The Synod led to the 1619 execution of the Republic's greatest statesman Johan van Oldenbarnevelt, who had supported the Arminian cause. In revenge his sons Reinier and Willem conspired to assassinate the (Gomarist) Dutch stadholder Maurits of Nassau, Prince of Orange. Other prominent members of Dutch society who had political, religious or personal grudges against the Prince lent their support. The plot was betrayed in February 1623, and the conspirators arrested and executed from March to May. Some unobtrusively restored tears, but otherwise in good condition.

LUTHER, Martin
(Lyon, Vers 1560). ______ Format : Petit in-4. [Click Below for Full Description]

"Etching and engraving, circa 1560, monogrammed in plate lower center. Magnificent proof, rich tone, printed on contemporary laid paper with watermark ""lily within the circle"", irregularly trimmed to copper, in excellent condition. The work was not described in any of the catalogs consulted, is very rare. Donato Bertelli was printer, publisher and map & print dealer in Venice Merzaria, ""all'insegna di S. Antonio LAFRERI (Salins, Giura 1512 - Roma 1577)
Incisione in rame, in buone condizioni. 34, tav. 8. Almagià XVIII; Tooley 446; Perini p. 43. Interesting geographic map of Piedmont, printed on a single large sheet, published for the first time in Rome by Lafrery around 1560, here presented in the second edition published by Petro de' Nobili at end of the XVI century. The attribution of this work is due to Roberto Almagià, followed afterwards by Tooley. Though it is not the first printed map of the region (Perini states it derives from an anonymous Venetian map of 1553), this work can be defined as the first analysis concerning uniquely the Piedmont, p … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]
