Paolo Ravagnano, 1560. The Veronese nobleman, astronomer and mathematician Pietro Pitati, dates not known but whose flourit is given as 1560, compiled almanacs and ephemerides including a continuation of Stoeffler's. 'The Council of Trent led to the printing of a number of works on the calendar, some of them prepared at an earlier date. One such example that is notable for its contents was by Petrus Pitatus (Verona 1564 [sic: there was a Venice edition that year], written 1539). He discussed the rule of Easter . and drew up a lunar calendar for 1539-1805. He argued for the same sort of lunar calendar adjustment as in the Breviary, but he also wanted to have no fewer than 14 days dropped for the solar calendar to bring it back (as he thought) to that of its founder, Julius Caesar. Most significantly for later history, accepting a value of 134 for J, he compromised and pleaded for the rule whereby three out of four centennial years be ordinary (non leap-years). This is, of course, the Gregorian rule' (J.D. North, in Proceedings of the Vat … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris: Le Royer, 1560. A very attractive copy of the first edition of this rare work on perspective, which Updike calls “one of the handsomest volumes of its time.” It is through this work that Jean Cousin became known as the major theorist of artists' perspective in sixteenth-century France, and was credited with perfecting the tiers points technique that was somewhat confusingly described by Pelerin at the beginning of the century. In his hands the tiers point technique “became a reliable, comprehensive and substantially accurate method for tackling the construction of space and the foreshortening of solid bodies” (Kemp, The Science of Art). The large woodcut frontispiece of the Livre de perspective is well known and often reproduced. It is “singularly inventive with its foreshortened perspective, displaying five polyhedrons set in a framework supported by acrobatic nudes. Later generations elaborated such frameworks in the painting of baroque ceilings. While the woodcut's architectonic perspective gives it added dimension in depth, it suggests the decorative schemes in wood, paint and plaster relief of Rosso and Primaticcio at Fontainebleau, or an engraving of a ceiling by a follower, Fantuzzi” (Wick, Sixteenth Century Architectural Books 30).Jean Cousin the Elder (1501- c.1560) was also a painter of considerable significance: “the most important of the painters working independently of the Fontainebleau school” (Blunt, Art and Architecture in France p. 112). A native of Sens, he was active in Paris by 1538, where he enjoyed … [Click Below for Full Description]

Franckfurter Philipp)

apud Iacobum Boyerium 1560 - - apud Iacobum Boyerium, Lugduni (Lyon) 1560, fort in 16 (12,2x8cm), (24) 676pp. [Click Below for Full Description]

Arnois, Robert
1560. Arnois, Robert. De Iustitia [Justitia] Divina et Humana Utriusque Origine ac Progressu, Virtute & Laudibus Iustitiae & Legum Omnium Mundi Liber. Paris: Apud Andream Wechelum, 1560. [2], [3]-114 pp. Quarto (8-1/4" x 6"). Contemporary limp vellum, early hand lettered title to spine, ties lacking. Light soiling, some rubbing to extremities. Large woodcut printer device to title page, handsome woodcut vignette to verso, woodcut head-piece. Some worming to margins with no effect on legibility, partial crack near center of text block, light toning. Ex-library. Location label to foot of spine, bookplate and another location label to front pastedown. A nice copy of a scarce title. * Only edition. With side-notes. Little is known about the author or this interesting work, and it is not listed in the standard references. It is an expansive neo-humanist treatise on jurisprudence that begins with a definition of justice and continues with a discussion of Roman, canon, civil and "jus naturale." The title page identifies the author as "Robertii Arnesii de Normanville" without listing any professional affiliations, which suggests he was a gentleman rather than a practicing jurist. No copies located in North America. OCLC and KVK locate 3 copies, all in Europe.

Paris: Guillaume Cavellat, 1560. Lovely printer's device on title, illustrated and decorated initials, text diagrams. Contemporary vellum; apart from a worm trail running through the lower blank inner margin and minor age browning, a generally good copy of a rare book with contemporary annotations and underlining. First edition in Latin from his scarce and little known treatise L'Algebra, described by Smith as "one of the first practical textbooks on algebra, and one in which he inaugurated the use of literal symbols, later made popular by Viète" (Rara Arithmetica, p. 245). The present translation represents a rare occasion in which Peletier wrote in Latin, for despite his enthusiasm to publish in the vernacular, his peculiar French orthography in previous works had been met with disdain. "In this work he adopted several original and ingenious ideas from Stifel's Arithmetica itegra and showed himself to be strongly influenced by Cardano" (DNB). Peletier studied the foundations of geometry and in 1557 he published In Euclidis elementa demonstrationum in which he rejected the method of superposition. Peletier (1517-1582) of Le Mans, was a noted French mathematical writer of the Renaissance who was also educated in the law, philosophy, medicine, and poetry. Although his work presented achievements already reached in Germany and Italy, he was the first mathematician to see relations between coefficients and roots of equations.
