He recorded only 67 short stories, shortened many of them and left out essential passages in the connecting parts of the framework story. Finally, he regrouped narratives so that the context intended by the author was destroyed. In 1559 Claude Gruget published the 2nd edition. Here all stories were recorded and the frame story was left. This edition is considered the 1st edition in terms of the originality and intention of the work. Jh. - VD 16, R 3113. Adams I, 89; Cantamessa, II, 3889, Anm. [Click Below for Full Description]

1560. In Very Good condition. Limited Edition. Number 3 of 160. The magnificent first edition of Khunrath's Amphitheatrum has always belonged to the rarest and most coveted books of Paracelsian theology, Christian Kabbalah, magic and alchemy. The reproductions of the artistically arranged texts and text images are preceded by a critical and historical study of Khunrath (ca. 1560-1605) as an important mystic of nature and the impact of his Amphitheatrum. The edition also provides a transcript and translation of the texts witin the images, an introduction to Khunrath's iconographical program as well as an extensive bibliography of his works. These are succeeded by a complete reprint of the Hanau edition (1609), with its own unique augmentation and design, including illustrations of the engravings added since the Hamburg edition. The edition also contains a reprint of Johann Arndt's Iudicium uber die 4 Figuren and a transcript of a mid-18th century German translation (based on the 1609 Hanau version), supplemented by a substantial introduction analyzing Khunrath's theosophy within the context of 18th-century piety and enlightenment. A double concordance as well as a detailed name index complete the edition. Very large & heavy.

Facsimile. Very good condition. Illustrated. See pictures. 1560 Geneva Bible Facsimile. 1st Edition. Black leather binding with marbled pages green with black swirls. Size: 9" x 11 1/2" x 4 3/8" thick. See pictures. The Geneva Bible followed the Great Bible of 1539, the first authorised Bible in English, which was the authorized Bible of the Church of England. During the reign of Queen Mary I of England (1553-58), a number of Protestant scholars fled from England to Geneva, Switzerland, which was then ruled as a republic in which John Calvin and, later, Theodore Beza, provided the primary spiritual and theological leadership. Among these scholars was William Whittingham, who supervised the translation now known as the Geneva Bible, in collaboration with Myles Coverdale, Christopher Goodman, Anthony Gilby, Thomas Sampson, and William Cole; several of this group later became prominent figures in the Vestments controversy. Whittingham was directly responsible for the New Testament, which was complete and published in 1557,[6] while Gilby oversaw the Old Testament. The first full edition of this Bible, with a further revised New Testament, appeared in 1560,[6] but it was not printed in England until 1575 (New Testament[6]) and 1576 (complete Bible[6]). Over 150 editions were issued; the last probably in 1644.[6] The very first Bible printed in Scotland was a Geneva Bible, which was first issued in 1579.[6] In fact, the involvement of Knox and Calvin in the creation of the Geneva Bible made it especially appealing in Scotland, where a law was passed in 1579 requiring every house … [Click Below for Full Description]

FIRST EDITION 1560. 4to, approximately 200 x 150 mm, 7¾ x 6 inches, Italian text, woodcut printer's device on title page, large folding circular woodcut map of Limagne, Auvergne, 1 full page illustration and 58 woodcut illustrations in the text, 46 are medallions, finely bound in modern red crushed morocco gilt by J. Haines, gilt lettering and decoration to spine with date at foot, upper and lower covers with central gilt crescent and star motif with gilt decorated frame, all edges gilt, decorated inner dentelles, binder's name at first inner bottom edge. Two binding creases on first few leaves and on a few at rear, browning to varying degrees throughout, heavy on some pages, a few pages unevenly browned (see attached image), all text legible, old ink stamp at bottom of title page, occasional old ink underlining, engraved bookplate to first pastedown, occasional small old ink spot, no loss to text, otherwise a good copy with the very early map. Produced as a second part to Simeoni's Le sententiose impresi though also issued separately. Some of the woodcuts are attributed to Pierre Eskrich, and were previously used in Rouillé's edition of Du Choul. The map, the earliest to depict a region of France in detail, purports to show the site of the famous battle of Caesar against Vercingetorix, based on Simeoni's careful researches into the episode in Caesar's Gallic Wars. It supplies a precious document on 16th century Auvergne, its towns, chateaux and churches. He recorded only 67 short stories, shortened many of them and left out essential passages in the connecting parts of the framework story. Finally, he regrouped narratives so that the context intended by the author was destroyed. In 1559 Claude Gruget published the 2nd edition.
