Copper engraving, mm 280x400, signe and dated Venetjis æneis formis Bolognini Zalterij Anno. MDLXVI (1566).Perfect wide margined copy with original marginsA MILESTONE IN CARTOGRAPHY OF NORTH AMERICA. THE FIRST MAP ENTIRELY DEVOTED TO THE CONTINENT AND THE FIRST DETAILED MAP TO SHOW THE STRAIT OF ANIAN SEPARATING ASIA AND AMERICA. The map was engraved by the veronese Paolo Forlani, as recently stated by Woodward, and not by Bolognino Zaltieri as previously attributed, who published the second state (like ours) adding his name to the plate. It is the first detailed available map to depict the Strait of Anian; a few previous maps had already depicted the Strait of Anian, (whose name origins from a Marco Polo's 1559 edition), but not with such detail, being all world maps. Forlani based his map largely on the western part of a Gastaldi world map published from 1561, even if important sources are also Cartier's discoveries (1534-42), and some spanish explorations, like the Francisco Vasques de Coronado one (1540-42):Tooley, "Maps in Italian Atlases of the Sixteenth Century," Imago Mundi 3 (1939), 80; David Woodward, "The Forlani Map of North America," Imago Mundi 46 (1994): 29-40; Burden, The Mapping of North America, 33; Meurer (Strabo) 191; Cohen, "Mapping of the West", pages 29-30.

Giovanni Zonara
(notizie da Treccani.it).

Jean FERNEL
Parisiis, Apud Andream Wechelum 1560. Bel exemplaire.

PIÑEYRO, Luys.
Alt-Japan-Katalog 1151; Cordier, Japonica, cols 290-291; Palau 226932. Rare first edition of a history of the persecution of Christian missionaries in Japan and Japanese converts to Christianity, written in Spanish by the Portuguese Jesuit Luys Piñeyro (1560-1620). The history is in five books followed by lists of martyrs, a table of chapter titles, etc. Initially the religious activities of the Jesuits, who arrived in 1549, were tolerated by the Japanese government. Upon seeing the brutal converting methods and the destruction of Japanese temples outside the metropolitan provinces, Shogun Hideyoshi changed his policy towards the Christians in 1587. Churches were demolished, and priests were ordered to leave the country. In 1616 a new edict was issued, ordering not only the expulsion of foreign priests but also demanding the death penalty for Japanese Christians who refused to renounce their beliefs. Many of the deported priests simply defied the Japanese government and returned to Japan, but only few were actually executed. The present work describes the background to the deteriorating relations between the Japanese rulers and the representatives of Christianity. Piñeyro also deals with the determination of the Jesuits to continue to preach their religion even in the face of persecution.Early ownerships inscription at foot of title-page. In very good condition, with ample margins and crisp paper.

A few pages with neat ink marginalia, including drawings and decorations in a near contemporary hand. Paper backing spine and endpapers are near contemporary Spanish leaves relating to St. Francis of Assisi. Front pastedown with bookseller's label "W.W. Blake/Old Book Specialist/16 De Septiembre 13/Mexico City, Mex." Title page with old ownership inscriptions, including Antonio Mendez. Last four leaves with closed tears to lower margins affecting several lines of text. Bound in contemporary full limp vellum with remains of two ties now lacking. Cover with nice patina, and what appears to be "homilem hoffm" in contemporary hand to the spine. Cover has been detached at front hinge to reveal spine. Oval seal branded on lower page edge (apparently of St. James, with partially legible motto "to de Santiago"). Canceled brand on top edge. Significant wear and loss at tail of spine though not affecting text. Hoffmeister (d.1547) was a German Augustinian, and prior of the house at Colmar in Alsace. He is remembered on the Roman Kalendar on August 2.

Astrologie, Physiognomik, Chiromantie etc.
Pergament d. 19. Jh. VD 16, R 3113. Adams I, 89; Cantamessa, II, 3889, Anm. [Click Below for Full Description]

RIPA, Cesare.
1560. Landwehr, Emblem books Low Countries 683; Praz, p. 474. First Dutch edition, newly and extensively illustrated, of a famous encyclopaedia of iconology, the Iconologia of Cesare Ripa (1560- 1645). It describes about 650 symbolic human or semi-human figures, illustrates nearly 200, and was intended as a guide for all kinds of artists, writers, orators and amateurs. In the present 1644 edition the Amsterdam publisher, bookseller and poet Dirck Pietersz. Pers (1581-1659) translated and edited Ripa's text and Castellini's additions and made further additions of his own. He also included 196 woodcut illustrations cut for this edition based on a selection of those in the 1630 edition. It was in this form that Ripa's work was best known to artists in the Dutch golden age and it remained in use by painters and designers for the decorative arts far into the 18th century. With water stains throughout, serious in the first few and last few leaves, and marginal tears or restorations in a few leaves, but still in good condition and with large margins. The binding is uniformly abraded but structurally sound. An important source of knowledge and inspiration for artists of the Dutch golden age. [Attributes: First Edition]

Giovanni Battista PITTONI detto "Battista Vicentino"
Etching and engraving, 1560, signed in the plate in the bottom center. Example in the first state of two, before the writing on the reverse. Magnificent proof, rich in shades, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to the copperplate or with small margins, in excellent condition. The plates by Pittoni were later reprinted in 1582 and included in the Vincenzo Scamozzi "Discorsi sopra l'Antichità di Roma", where the views are weaker and with a descriptive text, on verso. The examples of the first edition, are to be considered very rare. Passavant 1 I/II Dimensioni 297 223mm [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Al-Qabisi, Abu Al Saqr 'Abd Al-'Aziz Ibn 'Uthman Ibn 'Ali [Alchabitius]) / Naibod, Valentin (ed. & comm.).
Cologne, Arnold Birckmann's heirs, 1560. - 4to. (32), "171" (recte: 471), (1) pp. With printer's woodcut device to title page, two initials and 19 woodcut diagrams in the text. Slightly later vellum. First edition of this important commentary on al-Qabisi's most influential work, "al-Madkhal" (the text of which is included in the Latin translation of Joannes Hispalensis prepared in 1144): an introductory exposition of some of the fundamental principles of genethlialogy, the astrological science of casting nativities, or divination as to the destinies of newborns. The author, known as "Alchabitus" in the Latin tradition, flourished in Aleppo, Syria, in the middle of the 10th century. "Although al-Qabisi's education was primarily in geometry and astronomy, his principal surviving treatise, 'Al-madkhal ila sina'at ahkam al-nujum' ('Introduction into the Art of Astrology') in five sections [.], is on astrology. The book, as the title indicates, is an introductory exposition of some of the fundamental principles of genethlialogy; its present usefulness lies primarily in its quotations from the Sassanian Andarzghar literature and from al-Kindi, the Indians, Ptolemy, Dorotheus of Sidon, Masha'allah, Hermes Trismegistus, and Valens. Although completely lacking in originality, it was highly valued as a textbook" (DSB). "Together with the writings of Abu Ma'shar and Sacrobosco's 'Sphaera mundi', 'al-Madkhal' became Europe's authoritative introduction to astrology between the 13th and the 16th century [.] In 1560 the commentary of Naibod (also known as Nabod or Naiboda) appeared in Co … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jean FERNEL
- Parisiis, Apud Andream Wechelum 1560. Bel exemplaire. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Giovanni Battista de’ CAVALIERI o CAVALLERIS
1560 - Bulino, circa 1560, firmato in lastra in basso a sinistra. Molto rara. Engraving, 1560 circa, signed on lower left plate. After a subject by Parmigianino. Magnificent work, printed on contemporary laid paper with "anchor in the circle" watermark, trimmed to platemark, paper fold on lower part, otherwise in good condition. The work derives from a drawing by Mazzola, copied also by Nicolò Rossigliani in a chiaroscuro. Cavalieri began to work in Venice as engraver, in the workshop of Bartelli; he moved to Rome in 1599, where to work first for Salamanca and Lafrery, and afterwards in his own typography. The present work bears the a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Philippe GALLE
Engraving, 1560 circa?, lettered in the image "Franciscus Floris inventor/Hieronimus Cock excudebat/ Cum gratia, et privilegio" and, on the right "Philippus Galle / fecit". In lower margin, Latin inscription "Cuius Praecepto fily sui immolationem parabat Abraham, eiusdem voluntate vivum servavit. O admirabile dei consilium!". After a subject by Frans Floris. A very good impression, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to the paltemark, small paper folds, otherwise in good conditions. Antonio LAFRERI
Parigi, 1560. Titolo & iscrizioni In alto a sinistra l’iscrizione Urbis Rome totius olim orbis domitricis, situs: cum adhuc extantibus, sacrosancte vetustatis monumentis PIRRHO LIGORIO NEAP. INVENTOR.
