VETTORI, Pietro (1499-1585). (Aristoteles). -
Firenze, Giunta, 1560. In - folio. Adams A - 1905. EDIT16 28240. Graesse, I, 213: «Edition excellente...» First edition of this commentary by the Florentine humanist Vettori, printed with the original Greek text and a Latin translation. Slight foxing here and there, but generally a good uncut and large copy, attractively bound in contemporary limp vellum, ms. title on spine.

Sleidanus, Ioannis (d. i. J. Philippi):
Straßburg, Th. Rihel, um 1560. 8 Bll., 872 S., 12 Bll. (letzte beiden weiß). Mit Holzschnitt-Druckermarke am Titel und zahlr. Holzschnitt-Initialen. 8°. STC 146. Cat. Unico III, 1204. Gamba 1285: «Edizione bella, pregevole e alquanto rara». Avicenna (Ibn Sina)]. Arcolani, Giovanni.
Venice, heirs of Lucantonio Giunta, 1560. Folio (227 x 317 mm). (18), 191 ff. (without final blank). Printer's device on title page and, in a different version, on the last page. Contemporary vellum. Traces of ties. First issue under this title, previously released as "Expositio in primam fen quarti canonis Avicennae" (1506). A commentary (with the text, in the version of Gerardus Cremonensis) of book four, part (fen) one of Avicenna's systematic "Canon of Medicine", written in Arabic but widely translated throughout the Middle Ages and the basis of medical training in the West as late as the mid-17th century. It continues in use to this day in parts of the Arab world. Through this encyclopedic work, the author exerted "perhaps a wider influence in the eastern and western hemispheres than any other Islamic thinker" (PMM). "The 'Qanun' [...] contains some of the most illuminating thoughts pertaining to distinction of mediastinitis from pleurisy; contagious nature of phthisis; distribution of diseases by water and soil; careful description of skin troubles; of sexual diseases and perversions; of nervous ailments" (Sarton, Introduction to the History of Science). The present part is dedicated to a discussion of feverish illnesses. - 17th century ownership "Bernardinus Statius Phys." on flyleaf. Some brownstaining throughout, as common; some worming to spine. Still a good copy. - Edit 16, CNCE 2345. Adams A 1541. Durling 245. Cf. Wellcome I, 387 (only the Venice reprint). PMM 11.

Velde, Jan van de II (c 1593-1641)
Representation of the month of April within the series of the 'Twelve months with views on Dutch towns'. Here is 'Het Leeprosen huys by Haerlem', the hospital for the leprous and mentally ill people in Haarlem as it looked in the beginning of the seventeenth century. As a matter of fact this etching is a real document of a building complex that was heavily remodelled during the centuries according to its different functions. In 1320 begun the building of the hospital, just outside the city walls. Here were taken for the quarantine the sicks from lepra and plague but also, since 1560, mentally ill people. This was probably the oldest health institution in the Netherlands. On the left the Sint-Jacobskapel (ca. 1319-1477) and in the center the buildings for the mentally ill. In the foreground a portion of a field where peasants are sowing; on the right foreground two gentlemen on horseback overlooking the landscape. On the right background some boats on a canal. In the sky, above in the center the zodiacal sign of the Taurus. Inscribed on the bottom:'APRILIS' and four lines of Latin text:'Si Ver nidificum venit, et aeidis ... novis seminibus seges.' numbered on the bottom right:'4' Etching on paper, trimmed to platemark; total: 275 x 363 mm; crease on the top right margin, on the sky, top left corner slightly damages but not affecting the plate; wonderful impression; Franken & van der Kellen (1883) nr. 153, p. 81; hollstein 37

[RUSCELLI, Girolamo]. ALESSIO PIEMONTESE.
Nycolas England. 1560-62. Part 1 8vo, parts 2 & 3 4to. 3 vols bound in one. Twentieth century full brown calf, spine with raised bands and black morocco gilt lettering piece; pp. [vi] + 122 + [10]; [iv] + 161 + [15]; 79 + [9], bound with engraved title pages; long contemporary manuscript note to verso of title page of vol 1, occasional marginal notes in ink, discreet repairs to edges of a few leaves in vol 3, a little faint browning, otherwise very good. Third English edition of vol 1, first English editions of vols 2 & 3. Translated from French by William Warde. This is a rare, early collection of these celebrated books, attributed to Girolamo Ruscelli (1500-1566), an Italian alchemist and physician. It deals primarily with pharmaceutical subjects but also gives guidance on, for instance, dyeing animal skins and making invisible ink. The work marks the swelling interest in Paracelsian, experimental medicine and the rejection of Galen's teaching; many of the medicines and cures described are highly dramatic, and often involve incredibly cruel processes such as melting a red-haired dog in oil. Others seem purely superstitious, such as giving a woman a boiled hare concoction for breakfast to gauge how fertile she is. It was hugely influential, especially in Britain where natural philosophers such as Francis Bacon were to follow the experimental example, and was translated into every European language. It was the first book to introduce the idea of science as a search for the secrets of nature, with Alessio as a wandering professor of the arcane. Indeed, later writings by Rus … [Click Below for Full Description]

APPIANUS D'ALEXANDRIE :
[Genève], Henri Estienne, Huldrich Fugger (Huldrici Fuggeri), 1560 ; in-8 ; plein vélin ivoire ; 100 pp. (A-F 8, G 2). (Renouard, 118).

ANDROUET DU CERCEAU, Jacques (circa 1510-1585)
Paris: circa 1560. The set of 46 engravings, plates 190 x 140 mm, sheets 320 x 210 mm, good impressions, watermark Edmond de (?), with margins. 19th-century calf gilt. Four plates re-margined, old reinforcements along gutters, occasional pale staining and paper toning, otherwise in good condition. Provenance: purchased from Librairie de Nobele, 1982. In the 16th century, Du Cerceau and Jan Vredeman de Vries each issued albums of furniture designs, the first of their kind to appear. The plates show beds, tables, one chair, twenty buffets and armoires so elaborate that no ordinary cabinetmaker could have made them. The buffets are especially ornate, displaying caryatids, sphinxes, masks, garlands of fruit or flowers, trophies, vases, etc. "Although many pieces are shown built on platforms to raise them off cold stone and tile floors, comfort appears to have been a minor consideration. The beds are shallow wooden boxes with all sorts of decorative protuberances-lion masks, swans, snakes, and monsters-on which to bruise the human body" (Janet Byrne, Renaissance Ornament Prints and Drawings, New York, 1981, p.110). Inscribed on the bottom:'APRILIS' and four lines of Latin text:'Si Ver nidificum venit, et aeidis ... novis seminibus seges.' numbered on the bottom right:'4'"."Etching on paper, trimmed to platemark; total: 275 x 363 mm; crease on the top right margin, on the sky, top left corner slightly damages but not affecting the plate; wonderful impression; Franken & van der Kellen (1883) nr. 153, p. 81; hollstein 37"
