Translated from the Nahuatl with notes and illustrations by Charles E Dibble and Arthur J O Anderson. Professor George M Foster's personal copy. Monographs of the School of American Research and the Museum of New Mexico. Limited to 1000 copies. All issues First editions. The Florentine Codex is the name given to 12 books created under the supervision of Bernardino de Sahagún between approximately 1540 and 1585. It is a copy of original source materials which are now lost, perhaps destroyed by the Spanish authorities who confiscated Sahagún's manuscripts. The original source materials were records of conversations and interviews with indigenous sources in Tlatelolco, Texcoco, and Tenochtitlan. The Florentine Codex is primarily a Nahuatl language text, written by trilingual Nahuatl, Spanish and Latin Aztec students of Sahagún. This Nahuatl text is written on the right side of the codex. Sections of this text were translated into Spanish, and written in the left column. However, many sections were not translated and some only summarized in their translation. In their place, the Florentine Codex has roughly 1,800 illustrations done by Aztec tlacuilos using European techniques. Some of the Spanish translation was censored or otherwise rewritten by Sahagún. Perhaps more than any other source, the Florentine Codex has been the major source of Aztec life in the years before the Spanish conquest even though a complete copy of the Florentine Codex, with all illustrations, was not published until 1979. Before then, only the censored and rewritten Spanish translation had been available. There is also a Spanish-only version of Sahagún's document. This copy was taken to Europe in 1580 by Rodrigo de Sequera, and is also referred to as the Sequera manuscript. The Spanish text was the basis for the Historia General de las Cosas de Nueva España (General History of the Things of New Spain) which is kept at the Laurentian Library in Florence. The Codex Matritense is a copy and compilation from the same sources as the Florentine Codex, corresponding to the material recompiled in Tlatelolco and Texcoco in Nahuatl. It has five books, and includes 175 illustrations. It is a very heavily censored translation of the Florentine Codex by Sahagún himself, done to appeal to the Spanish authorities. The two codices are housed in the Library of the Royal Palace and the Royal History Museum, in Madrid. Other names include the Codices Matritense and the Madrid Codex (not to be confused with the Maya Madrid Codex. A short version of this document, Breve compendio de los soles idolátricos que los indios desta Nueva España usaban en tiempos de su infidelidad ("Short Compendium of the Idolatry Used by the New Spain Indians during their Unfaithfulness"), was sent by Sahagún to Pope Pius V.George McClelland Foster, Jr born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on October 9, 1913, died on May 18, 2006, at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979, when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications, his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics, including acculturation, long-term fieldwork, peasant economies, pottery making, public health, social structure, symbolic systems, technological change, theories of illness and wellness, humoral medicine in Latin America, and worldview. The quantity, quality, and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of his major publications have been reprinted and/or translated. Provenance from the executor of Foster's library laid in.Condition:Foster's stamp to tiles of all copies, volume 11 with some of Foster's underlining, a touch of rubbing to extremities with some corners bumped else a very good to fine set issued without jackets.

[Lyons: Jacques Giunta], 1540. [xvi], 256 ff. Octavo (6" x 4"). Recent blind-tooled calf in period style, raised bands and gilt title to spine. Title page printed in black and red with a woodcut architectural border, 20 woodcut initials decorated in contemporary gold, red and blue pigments. Moderate toning to text, faint dampstaining in places. Interesting contemporary marginalia and underlining to preliminaries and text, heavier on some pages than others, occasional loss to marginalia due to trimming. A handsome copy of an important work. * Fifth edition, the last in the author's lifetime. Nevizzano was a professor of law at the University of Turin and the author of several legal studies. His Sylva Nuptialis (1521) is a wide-ranging miscellany derived from Roman and Canon law that addresses judicial problems connected with virginity, marriage, sexual matters, domestic manners, morals and estates. His view of women in this work is notably satirical and sarcastic, which probably enhanced its popularity. In his opinion, women were enthusiastic and effective torturers of men. They were successful, he reasoned, because their bodies were created by Satan and inhabited by the souls of fallen angels. The author's misogyny, along with his relaxed views about fornication and concubinage, which he did not consider mortal sins, attracted the Church's attention. He was commanded to remove some of the more objectionable passages in subsequent editions, which he did. He did not go

        Diana cacciatrice

"Engraving, circa 1540, signed in plate at lower center. A beautiful impression, before the finishing touches on burin, printed on contemporary laid paper with watermark ""ancre in the circle"", trimmed to the borderline, perfectly executed restoration at upper right corner, otherwise in excellent condition. The subject is inspired by a lost drawing by Parmigianino. This print, inserted by Bartsch between anonymous works, has previously been attributed by Oberhuber to Bonasone until the recent award to Caccianemici by Catelli, then later confirmed by other researchers. Vasari speaks of Caccianemici as a nobleman from Bologna who loved to paint using the colors very good, and realized that some of the finished drawings in his possession. Caccianemici imitated the manner of Parmigianino working for pleasure, often making a gift of his works to friends. Its production is now known to us only in etching, two chisels and a drawing. Although known in only one state, Diana the huntress seems to have more state, and recently an exemple of a late state appeared in the sale of Bassange. Rare and fascinating work."       Bulino, 1540, monogrammato in lastra. Engraving, 1540, signed on plate. A good impression, printed on contemporary paper, trimmed to the platemar, in good conditions. Shortly before 1520, several young artists in the immediate circle of Albercht Dürer began making remarkably small engravings that challenged the viewer with a world in miniature; a world of new secular subject and of unconventional interpretations of traditional themes. Because of the scale of their engravings these artists have long been saddled with the unflattering collective name the Little Masters. The core of the group consist in three Nuremberg artists, Hans Sebald & Bartel Beham and Georg Pencz, Jacob Bink form Cologne and Heinrich Aldegrever from Soest.         Tabula orientalis regionis, Asiae feilicet extremas compleetens terras & regna

This is one of the earliest maps of the whole continent based on the recent geographical discoveries by Portuguese navigators. The outline of the Asian mainland is relatively well established. India appears as a peninsula and Sri Lanka, called Zalon, is correctly located. Cambay, Goa and Cannonore are all shown, reflecting the Portuguese presence on India's west coast. Malacca is correctly located on the Malay Peninsula and the Indonesian island of Sumatra has inherited the name Taprobana from Sri Lanka, but also bears the name Sumatra. Java appears as two islands, Java Maior and Java Minor. The famed Spice Islands of Moluccas are located, but oddly shaped. The coastline of China is fairly accurate but Korea and Japan are absent. Northern Asia is named India Superior with the eastern most part left off the map. An archipelago of 7448 islands lies off the eastern coastline. The Indian Ocean is filled with a huge sea monster and a fantastic two-tailed mermaid. Basilea Basle 350 260

Bibliografia: Bartsch 14. Dimensioni 71x101 Etching, 1540 circa, signed with monogram on lower left. After a subject by Parmigianino. A fine work, printed on contemporary laid paper without watermark, trimmed to platemark or with thin margins, light abrasion on lower left corner, otherwise on excellent condition. The subject is the allegory of one of the Seven Liberal Arts. The real identity of Monogrammist FP is still unknown, though some scholars tried to match him with Antonio Fantuzzi. Almost all of his works derive from Parmigianino?s drawings, characteristic he shares with Fantuzzi and that still makes people think they might be the same person. Some studies on the peculiar way of carving state that he might be Mazzola himself, a theory we however exclude. Bartsch 14. Dimensioni 71x101.

        Damo ed Eva

Bulino, 1540 circa, monogrammato in lastra. Engraving, 1540 circa, signed on plate. Anon copy aftre Beham's engraving. This engraving comes from an old collection and were pasted in XVIII century portofolio. Bartsch App 1. Size 52x79.

"Novae Insulae XVII Nova Tabula" from Geographia universalis, vetus et nova (Ptolemy's Geography)

Basel, 1540. THE FIRST MAP TO SHOW NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA AS SEPARATE ENTITIES Woodcut: 121/8" x 147/8" References: Seymour I. Schwartz & Ralph E. Ehrenberg, The Mapping of America (New York, 1980), 45; Philip D. Burden, The Mapping of North America: A List of Printed Maps 1511-1670 (Rickmansworth, 1996), 15-17. In 1540, Basel-based cartographer Sebastian Münster published a groundbreaking edition of Ptolemy's Geography, based on the Latin translation of Willibard Pirckheimer, that included this important early map devoted exclusively to the New World. Stretching from Greenland down the coast of Newfoundland to Florida and the Caribbean (with "Cuba" distinctly labeled), and as far south as the Strait of Magellan, the map includes corners of Asia, Europe and Africa, but emphasizes the notion that the recently discovered landmasses are a distinct entity: a truly New World as opposed to a part of Asia, as many previous geographers believed. When Münster included this map in a second publication, his great Cosmographia universalis (first published 1540), he introduced his concept of the New World to an international public. The book, ultimately translated into five languages and published in dozens of different editions, proved to be one of the most influential works dealing with geography in the sixteenth century, and Münster's map became the most widely circulated contemporary delineation of the New World until the publication of Ortelius's atlas in 1570. Münster's map is a revealing lens onto contemporary geographical ideas about the Americas. The eastern coastline, although distorted in places, is remarkably recognizable considering that fewer than fifty years had transpired since Columbus's first voyage. The dearth of knowledge regarding the vast inland regions is reflected in the lack of detail other than conventional symbols for mountains and forests. The outline of South America is based on recent information gleaned from the discoveries of Magellan, a source that Münster acknowledged by depicting the explorer's ship in the Pacific Ocean. Münster, a native of Ingelheim near Mainz in Germany, studied Hebrew at Heidelberg and became an eminent professor in that field as well as a scholar of geography. He was also an innovator in the technological development of map printing. In the sixteenth century the printing of image and text together was still a particular challenge, and Münster was one of the first to create space for the insertion of place-names in metal type within the woodblocks used to print his maps. Münster's most significant contribution to the history of cartography, however, was this map, which provides a rare glimpse into changing perceptions of the New World.. Book.

Nogle marginaltilskrifter i samtidig hånd. (Collijn)."This Swedish Bible is the first containing the entire text and the only complete Bible printed in Sweden in the 16th century. The translation is based on the Luther Bibles of 1523 and 1534 and was made under the direct supervision of the Swedish reformers, Laurentius Petri and Olavus Petri, who in this work laid the foundation of the modern Swedish language. Their text was used, with small alterations, in numerous editions up to the beginning of the 19th century..... the printing of this Bible, which was the largest typographical undertaken of the century, had to be entrusted to a foreign printer, Georg Richoff of Lubeck, who was invited to Uppsala. He brought new type material, the Teuerdanck Fraktur for headlines and a Wittenber Schwabach for the text, and more than ten series of initials of different sizes, thus introducing the typographical resources of the German High renaissnace into Sweden. He also brought a wide range of wood-blocks, mainly from Wittenberg, for the sumpttuous illustrations: an architectural title-frame, a cricifix, the arms of the Realm and 60 illustrations in the text. Of these 7 are originals by Lucas Cranach the Elder and 4 by his pupils, 3 by Georg Lemberger and the rest copies from Cranach, Altdorfer, the monogrammist AW and DS, and from Lemberger's series of Apocalypse-illustrations for the first Wittenberg octavo Testament of 1524.... The three original blocks by Lemberger are known only from this Bible... This Bible is esteemed to be second only to the 1492 "revelationes" among printed Swedish books."(Lindberg "Swedish Books 1280-1967", p. 15).The Vasa-Bible contains further the FIRST PRINTED MAP IN SWEDEN, the so-called "Wittenberg World Map" or "Daniel's Dream Map" (128 x 175 mm) printed on F 104 verso (in Der Prophet Daniel). The map shows the three continents Asia, Europe and Africa in a crude form. (Africa is here spelled 'Affrica').The map printed here is the first version, block 2 of the map, only known from the Vasa-Bible.The first mention of Daniel's Dream Map is made in a commentary on the prophet Daniel by Justus Jonas and Philipp Melanchthon in December 1529 and immediately afterwards in January 1530 in an interpretation of the book of the prophet Daniel by Martin Luther, both published by Hans Lufft in Wittenberg. (See www.daniels-dream-map.com). Collijn "Sveriges Bibliogrrafi intill År 1600", Bd. II: pp. 88-104. - Darlow a. Moule: 8808. - Rumball-Petre: 277. - Lindberg "Swedish Books 1280-1967", nr. 15
