Paris: Philippe Le Noir [and Guillaume Le Bret], 4 March 1538 [1539 N.S.]. 8vo (144 x 85 mm). [8], 196 leaves. Title printed in red and black. Bâtarde type. Small typographic pointing hands used in text throughout. Half-page woodcut opening text of an author presenting his book to a seated dignitary, with reserved space for letterpress name, here "Jehan bocasse"; a variety of metalcut floriated initials, final verso with woodcut device of Guillaume Le Bret (Renouard 588). CC3-6, occasional faint foxing, small stain in quire M. Nineteenth-century French blue straight-grained morocco (ca. 1820), covers with gilt rule border enclosing blind roll-tooled neoclassical frame and central blind-stamped lozenge, spine gold-tooled and lettered, board edges very finely gold-tooled, gilt edges, green patterned pastepaper endleaves (corners very lightly bumped, else fine). *** An attractive copy of the second edition of De mulieribus claris in French, following the Vérard edition printed in 1493. Although Vérard tried to pass the translation off as his own, it was in fact a slightly revised version of an anonymous French translation made ca. 1401. Vérard's editions of Boccaccio in French had made the writer more accessible to a French public, but it was not until the sixteenth century that his works became more widely known, and frequently imitated. This was the "golden age" for Boccaccio in France, on … [Click Below for Full Description]

GIRALDI (Lilio Gregorio).
Basileae, Apud Michael Isingrand, 1539. in-8.12ff. 177pp. [Click Below for Full Description]

Ff6v of the second part (in the last three appearances a contemporary hand has added at the top of the woodcut the inscription 'FABIUS MAXIMUS PATRIT ROMANUS'); on the second title-page, a large round horseback portrait of Orlando (the same hand has added to the caption in brown ink 'IL CONTE', and 'IL PALADINO'). Early twentieth-century vellum with overlapping edges, ink title on the spine. Gilt edges. A good copy, worm track, partially repaired, in the lower margin of fols. Vittoria Colonna
[Venice, Niccolò Zoppino?], 1539. 8° (141x95 mm). Collation: A-F8. [48] leaves, complete with the last leaf blank. Roman and italic type. Old vellum over pasteboards, inked title on the spine. A very good copy. Slightly foxed and waterstained in places.Provenance: 'di giannantonio Bartholi. Ede sua amicj' (contemporary ownership inscription on the title-page); 'di Paolo franceschi' (later ownership inscription on the same leaf). Rare second edition, edited by Filippo Pirogallo and containing the same dedication from him to Alessandro Vercelli as in the first edition, which appeared in Parma in 1538. Pirogallo's unauthorized publishing aroused Vittoria's irritation. "The angry poetess could not prevent the piracy edition, because a copy right did not exist at her time. Pirogallo defended himself: 'The annoyance of one single lady has less importance than the demand of so many people'. He asked pardon for some errors, which had 'crept in', because he did not have the original sonnets at hand" (M. Musiol, Vittoria Colonna. A Female Genius of Italian Renaissance, Berlin 2013, p. 167). In 1539, the Rime by Vittoria Colonna – the most famous Italian poetess of her age – was printed three times: the Florentine edition issued in July by Nicolo d'Aristotile followed by two other prints which appeared in Venice, the first published by Giovanni Marco Salvioni, and the second without mention of a printer or month of publication, but likely attributable to Zoppino. The present edition contains the same poems as the first: a total of 145 poems, including nine by other authors … [Click Below for Full Description]

A LARGE PAPAL BULL OF POPE PAUL III ON VELLUM
Italy, 1539. This highly decorative Papal Bull affirms certain privileges bestowed on the Dominican community of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, the headquarters of the Dominicans in Rome. It confirms that (male) members of the community have the right to preach, kindle lights at night, say Mass, hold a procession on the Friday after Corpus Christi, and visit the sick. The Dominicans are also given permission for charitable works, such as hearing confession and bringing the sacrament to the sick at the hospital of San Giacomo in Augusta, Santa Maria del Popolo, Saints Cosmas and Damian, and the hospital of Santo Spirito in Sassia. The document states that the monks are not to pass judgment outside their own jurisdiction or pronounce excommunications, and further that the nuns should not wander about the streets, but instead remain within their cloister. Paul III (1468-1549) served as pope from 1534-49, following the two Medici popes, Leo X and Clement VII. A humanist and art patron like the Medici, Paul is credited with beginning the work of the Catholic Reformation, intending to instill a renewed discipline and dedication within the Church.. 559 x 737 mm. (22 x 29"). Single column, 59 lines of text in a humanist hand. Occasional lettering in red, "IN XPI NOMINE AMEN" in large, multicolored letters at the top of the text, THREE GOLD-FRAMED MEDALLIONS WITH MINIATURES OF SAINTS PETER AND PAUL ON EITHER SIDE, AND TWO ANGELS HOLDING A CHALICE AND COMMUNION WAFER IN THE MIDDLE, both edges with a full floral border in multiple colors. An unidentified stamp at the bottom of the docum … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sammelband of 32 rare tracts published between 1539-1601, mostly in the Swiss university cities of Basel and Zurich. The majority of the tracts date from the 1580s and are related by the common theme of academia, with a significant number of dissertations and theses on the subjects of law and theology. There is also a good representation of neo-latin poetry, usually with the purpose of celebrating a marriage or a political achievement, as well as a number of brief Protestant theological tracts, including those of some from rather prominent 16th century Protestant Reformers such as Johann Wilhelm Stuck (1542-1607) and Andreas Karlstadt (1486-1541). Stuck himself seems to be a theme of the Sammelband as there are works authored by him, presentation copies given by him, and poems by other authors celebrating the marriage of his children. Among the many (and very rare) tracts included here, I will highlight a few that are of special interest. Johann Stuck's 'Prognosticon, sive praedictio' was published in Zurich in 1588, and is an astrological prediction of events that will happen in that same year based on astronomical phenomena. This copy is a presentation copy, given to D. D. Melchior Rolmundo by the author. The tract is 16 leaves or 32 pages in length. I could locate only 2 copies of this title in the United States. "In the full title it is further described as a public lecture course at the University of Jena, in which, besides an easy method of learning chemical operations and the correction of many medicaments, various chemical discourses are printed, closing with an accurate account of a most famous preparation of potable gold, now for certain reasons made public.Brendel opens with a praise of chemistry, then defines and divides it." (Thorndike). "As a chemist he introduced into practice certain medicines which bear his name, and he was a strong supporter of the iatro-chemical principles. He was also a staunch believer in alchemy, assigning to it great antiquity" (Ferguson). Be … [Click Below for Full Description]

LUCAIN
Lugduni (Lyon): apud Antonium Gryphium. New edition. The earliest edition published by Sebastianum Gryphium, in 8 we have found is that in 1539, owned by BN France. Italic print. Full contemporary calf. Back tooled raised florets, roulette cold tail and cap. Hot boards struck a central medallion with Renaissance motifs. Nets coaching. Gilt edges. Friction. Mors skillfully restored. Edition of the most famous work of Lucan (39-65), better known by the name of the Pharsalia, which tells the epic form in the wars between Caesar and Pompey. The poem follows the chronological order of events and is not without historical interest. The Latin poet was born in Cordoba in Spain, he fell out of favor with Nero, then participated in the conspiracy Nison against the emperor, who ordered him to suicide. His contemporaries gave him a brilliant language and a rare energy style, cleaner perhaps eloquence than poetry. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. 1539. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Rob Estienne HEBREW OT Bible Habakkuk Jewish Kimchi Commentary Judaica An exceedingly rare 16th-century Hebrew Bible printed in Paris by Robert Estienne. In 1540, Robert Estienne, published a Hebrew Bible, of the minor prophets, which included David Kimchi's commentary and edited by Vatablus. This medieval commentary was first published in Hebrew in 1525 (D&M 5085). According to Darlow and Moule, this Bible includes "the general title (1539) and list of books are placed before Hosea. The other books have separate titles, dated 1539 or 1540. Each part has its own register and pagination." The uniqueness of this Bible is that David Kimchi's commentary had significant objections to Christianity. [Attributes: First Edition]

Richard Taverner
THERE IS A STORY BEHIND EVERY BLEMISH! Bible leaf collectors know that some leaves are hard to look at and others look as new as the day they left the printing press. The condition of a particular leaf reflects its history and is not an indication of its actual value. Perfect leaves are ones that have seen little or no use over the centuries in contrast to those that are scarred by the ravages of time. Unblemished leaves are unloved leaves because they have had little contact with sinners. Imperfect leaves tell a story. Some are torn and ripped and worn away by excessive use while others have burns or worm holes and still others are water stained by flood and sometimes even tears. Each ugly mark or stain is in fact a beautiful witness to the Word of God, which, "liveth and abideth forever." We offer Bible leaves as we acquire them letting their condition speak for themselves. All our leaves are sold as seen on eBay. You may request additional images and information for any leaf. Choice Leaves, Finer than Gold, from the Word of God Taste and see! It's sweeter than honey!!
