SALAMANCA UNIVERSITY
Salamanca: [P. de Castro, 1538. Gilt brown morocco (B. Vera), spine and title gilt. FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST PRINTED STATUTES OF ANY SPANISH UNIVERSITY.  SALAMANCA'S GOVERNING DOCUMENTS WERE THE TEMPLATE FOR THIRTY-ONE NEW WORLD HISPANIC UNIVERSITIES ERECTED BY THE END OF THE 18TH CENTURY.  Established in the 1220s, Salamanca was the jewel of Spanish higher education, offering degrees in theology, medicine, natural and moral philosophy, the liberal arts and law. "It was among the most decisive factors in the formation of the Spanish world and its ideology" (Riesco Terrero, tr.).  These sixty-five articles touch every aspect of academic life, from the election of officers and courses of study to library and archive maintenance and the hospital. They confirm the independence of the Rector, codify judicial checks on the four principal colleges, ban luxury clothing and stipulate that street sweepers keep their appointed rounds.  I have located seven examples world-wide (Salamanca, Madrid, Oviedo, Escorial (two), Lisbon, Paris). Of these, the first five are defective, having 30 leaves or fewer, and the final two are of undetermined composition. In good condition (minor stain in the upper margins, scattered foxing). ¶Rodriguez Cruz, Salmantica Docet. VULTEIUS, Joannes. 1510-1542
Paris: S. de Colines, 1538. Mid-17th-century blind-ruled vellum, flat spine with manuscript title, edges sprinkled red and blue, ruled in red. Bound with: Vulteius, Joannes. 1510-1542.  Inscriptionum Libri Duo...Xeniorum libellus. Paris, S. de Colines 1538. 16mo. 48, [4] leaves. Divisional title, ruled in red. Ad I-II: First Editions. Praise and insult compete in poems addressed to Grolier, Chas. Estienne, Geo. de Scève, Oronce Finé.... The autobiographical pieces paint THE POET'S LIFE AT COURT AND IN THE TAVERN. He wrote frankly of seduction (a Lolita, a salacious country boy...), attacked printer Étienne Dolet and buttered up Marguerite de Valois. His "candor" sparked his murder four years later (the perpetrator went free...). Nice copies, blind stamp of the Renaissance scholar Mark Pattison (1813-84), owner of "the largest private library of his time at Oxford" (DNB); small later bookplate effaced. ¶Cioranesco 22021-2; Renouard, Bibliographie des éditions de S. de Colines 298-9.

APPIANUS of Alexandria
1538. Both titles with Vascosan's ?Prelum Ascensianum? device (from Jodocus Badius Ascensius) with Badius' fine architectural title-border with cherubs and medallions. Part two with ornamental woodcut strip of flowers and insects similar to Geoffroy Tory's ?moderne? borders; Badius' large satyr initial ?S?, seven of the large initials designed by Oronce Finé.Two parts in one vol. Folio. [18]ff. 283pp.; [10]ff. 41pp. (lacks final blank).Contemporary vellum over paste-board (head and foot of spine restored). A finely printed Vascosan edition of Pier Candido Decembrio's translation of Appianus with the text of Paterculus edited by Beatus Rhenanus. Michel Vascosan here uses his father-in-law Badius Ascensius' famous ?printing press? device, title-border, and some delightful woodcut initials and ornaments which complement his elegant roman type and produce an exceptional example of Parisian printing of the early 1500's.Though Appian's history covers the period from the arrival of Aeneas in Italy to the Battle of Actium in 31B.C. the most valuable books are his accounts of the Macedonian Wars, the Third Punic War, the Illyrian Wars and his first book of the Civil Wars. This final book covers a period for which there is no other continuous record. Adams A1345. BMSTC (French), p. 21. Mortimer A28. Schweiger I, 40.

Southwark: James Nycolson, 1538. THERE IS A STORY BEHIND EVERY BLEMISH! Bible leaf collectors know that some leaves are hard to look at and others look as new as the day they left the printing press. The condition of a particular leaf reflects its history and is not an indication of its actual value. Perfect leaves are ones that have seen little or no use over the centuries in contrast to those that are scarred by the ravages of time. Unblemished leaves are unloved leaves because they have had little contact with sinners. Imperfect leaves tell a story. Some are torn and ripped and worn away by excessive use while others have burns or worm holes and still others are water stained by flood and sometimes even tears. Each ugly mark or stain is in fact a beautiful witness to the Word of God, which, "liveth and abideth forever." We offer Bible leaves as we acquire them letting their condition speak for themselves. All our leaves are sold as seen on eBay. You may request additional images and information for any leaf. Choice Leaves, Finer than Gold, from the Word of God Taste and see! It's sweeter than honey!! Giovanni Battista SCULTORI (Mantova 1503 - 1575)
Bulino, 1538, datato e monogrammato in lastra in basso a sinistra. "Engraving, 1538, monogrammed and dated on plate at the bottom left corner. After Michelangelo. Example of the second state of two. A very nice impression, printed on contemporary laid paper without watermark but datable to the first half of the sixteenth century, with small margins, in excellent condition. According to some scholars, the composition is a Scultori's invention, while for others it comes from Luca Penni. Recent studies identify the subject as the detail of the River Eridiano in the ""Fall of Phaeton"" by Michelangelo. Exponent of the school Valance '500, the Sculptor is a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Solida legatura settecentesca in piena pergamena rigida dipinta. Dorso a nervi con titoli in oro su tassello. Tagli colorati e sguardie marmorizzate.
