Rientrato a Franco … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rare and early Lyonese edition of this influential Latin translation of the Ilias, published for the first time the year before in Venice. The humanist Andreas Divus came from Capodistria (today Koper in Istria / Slovenia) as his friend Pier Paolo Vergerio to whom his introduction here is dedicated. In this preface he describes a dream that urged him to translate important Greek authors and promises to supply more texts by Aristophanes, Hesiodus and Theocritus. He also adds a poem (two pages) to the scholars of ancient Greek. "His Latin translations of Homer published in 1537 (Venice) were extremely literal and ad verbum (i.e. word for word). While this was the first published version of the Iliad and Odyssey in Latin, the originality of the translation of Divus has been questioned: there are very close parallels with a much earlier translation by Leontius Pilatus... They were used by George Chapman in his translations of the Iliad and Odyssey... It has been said that Chapman's knowledge of Greek was not strong enough to resist entirely the Latin of Divus, … [Click Below for Full Description]

COUTO, Diogo do.
1538. [16], 426, [5], [1 blank] pp.Rare first edition of the only account of the life of Paulo de Lima Pereira (1538-1589), leader of the Portuguese military campaign in India. It was originally written in 1611 by the captain's friend, the historian Diogo do Couto (ca. 1542-1616), but not published until the present edition, more than 150 years later, with a foreword by the celebrated Portuguese bibliographer Diogo Barbosa Machado. The section on the shipwreck and death of Paulo de Lima was taken from the manuscript and published in Brito's História trágico-maritima (1729-1736). It includes the attack on the Malabar pirate Khunali and the destruction of Johor Lama, Singapore.Couto (1542-1616) impressed the Lisbon court in general and King João's brother Luis of Portugal in particular at an early age. Under Luis's patronage he studied at the Jesuit college and elsewhere. Luis died in 1555, however, and Couto set off for Portuguese India as a soldier in 1556. Aside from a visit to Portugal in 1569-1571, he was to remain in Asia for the rest of his life, staying mostly at Goa, but also serving the military in the Red Sea and the Gulf.One quire heavily browned, some other leaves slightly browned, one leaf with a tear, wormholes throughout the foot margin, and the spine slightly rubbed and with a few wormholes, but mostly in good condition.l Boxer, The tragic history of the sea 1589-1622; Innocêncio II, p. 155; G.P. GALLUCCI, Giovanni Paolo.
[8], 228 ll.First edition of a well-illustrated encyclopaedia of astronomical and surveying instruments available from classical times to the time of publication, by the Italian astronomer Giovanni Paolo Gallucci (1538-ca. 1621), a well-known private tutor to the Venetian nobility and founding member of the Second Venetian Academy. It gives a comprehensive summary of the knowledge of astronomy, cosmography and mathematics at the time of Galileo. "It describes instruments designed by others (Finé, Apian, Gemma Frisius, etc.) and gives credit to the original inventors. The one exception to this is the Visorio, which Gallucci claims as his own, but an identical instrument by Waldseemüller can be found illustrated in the 1512 edition of Margarita Philosophica by Gregor Reisch. Other instruments, such as the Hemispherical Uranico (a complicated device used for computations dealing with the moon, sun and stars), appear to be of Gallucci's invention. Besides the usual portable instruments, he also includes a simple quadrant and a two-ringed armillary built into the church of Santa Maria Novella in Florence" (Erwin Tomash). For some of the instruments this is the only description available.The present second issue of the first edition appeared a year after the first.With the owner's label of the Capuchin friar and astronomer Agostino da Piacenza (1747-1839) and the related library stamp "Bibliotheca Capucinorum Placentiae" on the engraved title-page. GRÉVIN, Jacques.
[8], 333, [6], [1 blank]; 90, [2] pp.First edition (the only edition in the original French) of a detailed and well-illustrated account of poisonous animals and plants and their venoms, along with the treatments for their poisoning, whether from bites, stings, contact or ingestion, by the Paris playwright and physician Jacques Grévin (ca. 1538/39-1570). The excellent illustrations include snakes, lizards, toads, frogs, a salamander, scorpians, spiders, various insects, centipedes, a leech, skates and other sorts of fish, a rabid dog, a mongoose (for its role in killing snakes), a dragon[!], poisonous plants, including mushrooms, and even a shrew, though its bite is not poisonous. It gives the names of the animals and plants in Greek, Latin and French. It was clearly designed to be issued together with the work that follows: the first French edition (in Grévin's verse translation) of the two surviving works of the Greek poet and physician Nicander of Colophon (active ca. 135 BCE; frequent later dates appear to be errors): Les theriaques (Theriaca, on poisonous animals and their bites and stings) and Les Contrepoisons (Alexipharmaca, on antidotes and treatments for wounds or illnesses caused by animal, vegetable and mineral poisons). Grévin made his translation from the 1549 Latin translation by the Paris physician Jean de Gorris, and he adds a 10-page verse dedication to De Gorris and shorter verses at the end of each of the two Nicander works. The book ends with a brief life of Nicander and an addendum list. Plantin's book production is excellent as usual.With two faded ear … [Click Below for Full Description]

LYDIUS, Balthasar.
[14], [2 blank], 415, [15], [1 blank]; 367; [38], [2 blank], [45], [3 blank], 358, [3], [1 blank] pp.; [5], 261, [1 blank] ll.Rare complete set, in their first editions, of 2 works in Latin by Balthasar Lydius on old Christian movements that can be considered precursors of Protestantism and that influenced its origins, the second including as an appendix the Waldensian confession of faith, the text dated 1538 at the end. The whole is bound with an edition of Jan Hus's confession of faith, dated 1535 at the end. Georg Rhau at Wittenberg first published these two confessions of faith, apparently in 1538 and 1535. Though Lydius's second work is presented as a second volume to his first, they are often found separately. Balthasar Lydius (1576-1629), the son of a Reformed minister in the Palatine who was called to Amsterdam when Balthasar was a small boy, became himself a Dutch Reformed minister at Dordrecht, the epicentre of the most important religious reformation in Dutch history, which took place during his tenure (1602-1629). In this context the present works serve to prove a historical basis for Protestantism to aid in the theological discussions.Berewout reissued his present 1616 Waldensia in 1622 and Niclaes Vincentsz van Spierinxhouck published Lydius's Dutch translation of the three works in a single edition at Dordrecht in 1624: Dry historische tractaetgens ... dienende tot verlichtinghe van de kerckelijcke historie.Lydius's present works are rare and have been so for a long time, already in 1878 it was called a "rare and excellent work" (NNBW) The STCN records only 4 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Feller/Bonjour 1/315. Bibl.-Signatur auf Innendeckel (Rudolf Tschudy). Sehr gutes und sehr sauberes Exemplar. [Attributes: First Edition]

HERODIAN
Excudebat Antverpiae: Vidua Martini Caesaris, 1538. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Herodian's 'History of Rome' is a collection of eight books covering the period of the death of Marcus Aurelius to the beginning of Gordian III's reign. Herodian's account is first-person narrative of one of the most politically unsettled times of the Roman Empire. It was first published in 1502 and was edited by Henri Estienne using the Latin of Poliziano. Important names covered in Herodian's 'History' include Commodus, Julianus, Severus, and Pertinax, as well as the history of Zosimus. This 1538 first Keyser (or Caesar) edition is quite rare. In fact, 16th-century editions of Herodian are markedly rare, especially those with Poliziano's Latin. According to the USTC, there are no examples in any institutional holding in the entire Western Hemisphere or any recent auction records! Exceedingly rare! [Attributes: First Edition]

Claudius Galenus;
Claudius Galenus; , 1538 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A very scarce, translation of Galen's 'Methodus Medeni'. In a contemporary vellum binding. This is one of many translations of Galen's works by Thomas Linacre. Linacre translated many medical works, to make them accessible to all Latin readers. He translated six of Galen's works total, including 'De Sanitae Tuenda', 'De Temperamentis', 'De Naturalibus', 'De Symptomatum' and 'De Pulsuum'. Linacre was a humanist physician, and noted scholar. The Linacre College, Oxford was named after him. This translation was first published in 1519, and bibliographically this copy sits as the seventh or eighth edition. (Wellcome 2639. Norman 852). Tightly bound. Methodus Medendi is a notable medical work by the physician, surgeon and philosopher Galen. He was one of the most prolific intellectuals of western antiquity. His medical works were extremely influential throughout the medieval period. A bright example of this very scarce work. Condition. Very Good. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

SALAMANCA UNIVERSITY
Salamanca: [P. de Castro, 1538. Gilt brown morocco (B. Vera), spine and title gilt. FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST PRINTED STATUTES OF ANY SPANISH UNIVERSITY.  SALAMANCA'S GOVERNING DOCUMENTS WERE THE TEMPLATE FOR THIRTY-ONE NEW WORLD HISPANIC UNIVERSITIES ERECTED BY THE END OF THE 18TH CENTURY.  Established in the 1220s, Salamanca was the jewel of Spanish higher education, offering degrees in theology, medicine, natural and moral philosophy, the liberal arts and law. "It was among the most decisive factors in the formation of the Spanish world and its ideology" (Riesco Terrero, tr.).  These sixty-five articles touch every aspect of academic life, from the election of officers and courses of study to library and archive maintenance and the hospital. They confirm the independence of the Rector, codify judicial checks on the four principal colleges, ban luxury clothing and stipulate that street sweepers keep their appointed rounds.  I have located seven examples world-wide (Salamanca, Madrid, Oviedo, Escorial (two), Lisbon, Paris). Of these, the first five are defective, having 30 leaves or fewer, and the final two are of undetermined composition. In good condition (minor stain in the upper margins, scattered foxing). ¶Rodriguez Cruz, Salmantica Docet. Paris: S. de Colines, 1538. Mid-17th-century blind-ruled vellum, flat spine with manuscript title, edges sprinkled red and blue, ruled in red. Bound with: Vulteius, Joannes. 1510-1542.  Inscriptionum Libri Duo...Xeniorum libellus. Paris, S. de Colines 1538. 16mo. 48, [4] leaves. Divisional title, ruled in red. Ad I-II: First Editions. Praise and insult compete in poems addressed to Grolier, Chas. Estienne, Geo. de Scève, Oronce Finé.... The autobiographical pieces paint THE POET'S LIFE AT COURT AND IN THE TAVERN. He wrote frankly of seduction (a Lolita, a salacious country boy...), attacked printer Étienne Dolet and buttered up Marguerite de Valois. His "candor" sparked his murder four years later (the perpetrator went free...). Nice copies, blind stamp of the Renaissance scholar Mark Pattison (1813-84), owner of "the largest private library of his time at Oxford" (DNB); small later bookplate effaced. ¶Cioranesco 22021-2; Renouard, Bibliographie des éditions de S. de Colines 298-9.

BOCCACCIO Giovanni
Venetia,: Giovanni Giolito da Trino, 1538. Venetia, Giovanni Giolito da Trino, 1538. In-16 gr. British Library, p. 38 - Manca all’Adams. Antica firma di apparten. ms. al frontesp.; qualche lieve alone ma certamente un buon esemplare.
