MACHIAVELLI]. SALAZAR, Diego de.
[Alcalá de Henares], Miguel de Eguya, 1536. FIRST EDITION, VERY RARE, OF SALAZAR’S ‘DIALOGUES’ ON THE ART OF WAR. A FREE TRANSLATION AND ADAPTATION OF MACHIAVELLI’S FAMOUS DELLA ARTE DELLA GUERRA, WHICH COMBINED THE PRECEPTS OF VEGETIUS WITH AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE MILITARY CHALLENGES OF THE TIME, IT ALSO INCLUDES MACHIAVELLI’S PREFACE. ‘While Machiavelli’s influence as a military theorist is often given a back seat to his writings as a political philosopher, that he considered Della Arte della Guerra to be his most important work is clear from his discussions of the military science and soldiery in other works. For example, in The Prince he declares that “a prince should have no other object, no any other thought, nor take anything as his art but that of war and its orders and discipline; for that is the only art which is of concern to one who commands.” In the course of the sixteenth century twenty-one editions appeared and it was translated into French, English, German, and Latin. Montaigne named Machiavelli next to Caesar, Polybius, and Commynes as an authority on military affairs. Although in the seventeenth century changing military methods brought other writers to the fore, Machiavelli was still frequently quoted. In the eighteenth century, the Marshal of Saxe leaned heavily on him when he composed his Reveries upon the Art of War (1757), and Algarotti—though without much basis—saw in Machiavelli the master who has taught Frederick the Great the tactics by which he astounded Europe. Like most people concerned with military matters, Jefferson had Machiavelli’s Art of … [Click Below for Full Description]

1536. Raro !!! Copertina muta antica in carta verde. [Click Below for Full Description]

Addita est epistola ad eximium Thomam Cademustum in qua quamplurima ad perfectionem operis totius, & multarum aliarum egritudinum curam leguntur.(Colophon: Venice, Francesco Bindoni, Maffeo Pasini, May) 1536. 4to. With title in a woodcut architectural border showing 4 charming monsters, 6 sentries and a winged putto. 19th-century panel-stamped and blind-tooled parchment. 50, [1], 1 blank] ll. Third(?) edition, by the printers and publishers of the first, of a famous treatise on syphilis by the Italian physician Niccolò Massa (1489-1569), professor of anatomy in Venice. It stresses the important role sexual intercourse plays in the contraction of syphilis, though he also believes it could arise spontaneously without sexual contact. He gives a comprehensive description of the symptoms and effects of the so-called French disease (the French sometimes called it the Neapolitan disease), including its neurological manifestations, and discusses the role of diet, sleep and exercise, together with the use of drugs, bloodletting, leeches and guaiac in the treatment of syphilis. The first edition is dated 1507, but was actually published in 1527. It is Massa's best-known work and remained popular throughout his life. With numerous early manuscript annotations in the margins. These have been attributed to the pioneering French surgeon Ambroise Paré (ca. 1510-1590) but we have not confirmed the attribution. GALENUS (GALEN), Claudius.
De medicamentorum compositione secundum locos, libri decem, nunc primum in lucem editi.Venice, (colophon: Luca Antonio Giunta), 1536. 8vo. With Giunta's woodcut device on title-page and repeated on the otherwise blank last leaf. Modern brown morocco. [24], 207, [1] ll. Second edition, the first printed by Giunta, of Galen's "On the composition of medicine according to locality", edited and translated into Latin by Johann Winter von Andernach (1505-1574). Andernach's translation was first printed in the previous year in Paris by Simon Colines. "There is no name more illustrious in the whole history of medicine than that of Galen... Written in Greek, this Galenic treasure reached the Latin Western World only through Arabic translations" (Hagelin). The recipes, mostly taken from earlier authorities such as Andromachus, Asclepiades, Pharmacion, Archigenes and others, are ordered from head to foot, starting with ailments of the hair, head, ears and nose, eyes, face and teeth, and mouth, and continuing down the body through the respiratory tract, stomach and liver, genitalia, kidney and bladder, and ending with sciatica and gout of the feet."During the 1530s the eminent printer, Luca Antonio Giunta (1517-1537), decided to publish a comprehensive edition of Galen's works in Latin so that physicians would no longer have to rely on writings from Greek and Arabic sources. Montanus, who led the editorial effort, chose many noted authorities and scholars to aid in the massive undertaking" (Heirs of Hippocrates). BUCHARDUS (BROCARDUS).
Descriptio Terrae Sanctae exactissima, ..., libellus divinarum scripturarum studiosis, multo utilissimus.Including: MARTYR D'ANGHIERA, Peter. De Novis insulis nuper repertis, & de moribus incolarum earundem.Antwerp, Joannes Steels, 1536. Small 8vo (14.5 x 10 cm). With 2 woodcut initials and Steels's woodcut device at the otherwise last blank page. Modern blind-tooled calf. [48] ll. First edition in this form of Burchardus's account of his travels in the Holy Land, with an early description of the New World by Peter Martyr. The German Dominican Buchardus, known in English as Burchard of Mount Sion, travelled extensively in the Holy Land around 1283. The narrative manifests a spirit of research and comparison and a rare sense of understanding. His geographical descriptions are very exact and based on his own observations. It is the most detailed account of the Holy Land to have come down to us from the 13th century and one of the last before the fall of the Kingdom of Jerusalem in 1291. The text was adapted from the 1532 edition of Grynaeus's Novus orbis.Peter Martyr (1455-1526) was a prolific Italian geographer and historian. Among his many works this history of the discoveries of the New World ranks high. It describes the discovery of Cuba and other islands, and like Buchardus's work it was included in Grynaeus's Novis orbis. The last page apparently exists in two states: some copies have the name of the printer, Johannes Grapheus, printed below the device of Steels. A very good copy. Alden & Landis 536/3; Medina, BHA 100; Nijhoff & Kronenberg 500; Sabin 8150; USTC 403941.

Wittenberg: Hans Lufft, 1536. THERE IS A STORY BEHIND EVERY BLEMISH! Bible leaf collectors know that some leaves are hard to look at and others look as new as the day they left the printing press. The condition of a particular leaf reflects its history and is not an indication of its actual value. Perfect leaves are ones that have seen little or no use over the centuries in contrast to those that are scarred by the ravages of time. Unblemished leaves are unloved leaves because they have had little contact with sinners. Imperfect leaves tell a story. CORPUS JURIS CIVILIS. Greek
Louvain: Rutger Rescius, 1536. Contemporary stiff vellum (soiled), remnants of four pigskin ties, manuscript spine title. The first professor of Greek at Louvain's Collegium Trilingue, Rescius (d. 1545) established his press in 1529 to produce textbooks, including this Greek paraphrase of Justinian's Institutes by the 6th-century jurist Theophilus Antecessor. Rescius edited and printed the text. Then, to stimulate sales, he announced a series of lectures on it. This outraged the Louvain University's law faculty and lead to his dismissal. In nice condition (last dozen leaves lightly stained), signatures dated 1569 of Claude Lebegue, possibly the late 16th-century lawyer. ¶Constantinidou, "Printers of the Greek Classics and Market Distribution in the Sixteenth Century" in Specialist Markets in the Early Modern Book World edd. VITRUVIUS POLLIO Marcus
Cfr. Studi e documenti d’architettura, n. 8, 12 - Fowler, 400 - Cicognara,706 - Berlin Katalog,I,1805. 1536. Valerius Maximus Valerii Maximi Moralium exemplorum libri nouem, summa diligentia castigati, ac fidelissimi eruditissimorum uirorum Oliuerij .f. Arzignanensis, Iodocique Ascensij Badij commentarijs enarrati, quibus addita sunt quatuor & uiginti exempla, nuper Aldi manutij industria inuenta, eiusdem Ascensij commentarijs exornata. Cum duplici indice, Venetiis, Insunt praeterea Theophili uiri eruditissimi perut, 1536. (Treccani).

1536. This book is from the library of J. Alden Weir and was catalogued "The Herculean Labours of Erasmus" with a publication date of 1536 and attributed to Dasipodius. There is no title page per se. The preface (colophon) indicates that this is biography of Erasmus and the titles of the chapters range from childhood through his letters. On a page headed Author, the three prominent names are Hieronymo Frobenius (there are other works on Erasmus attributed to Frobenius), Nicolao Episcopio and Boniface Amberbach. These people were in Basel at about this time (as was Dasipodius). The latest date found is 1536, but this is also the date of the death of Erasmus. The spine has a date of 1550 inked on it. This book is clean, tight, square and essentially unmarked (a few notes). It is rubbed. It has 775 amazingly clear, lightly toned pages written in Latin and Greek bound in boards covered in pigskin. The spine has three raised bands with an inked titles (Erasmus) and date (1550). There's a small split at the base of the spine, some notes (dated 1720) on the front paste down, and the remains of brass clasps on the fore edge. MELA Pomponius; SOLINUS Gaius Julius
[1536]. Woodcut initials. 8vo (155 x 100mm). 24ff (one blank), 407(i.e. 415), [1]pp. Contemporary limp green vellum with two bands (general wear). [Basel, Robert Winter, Collected edition of two important works of ancient geography, Pomponius Mela's De Situ Orbis, 'A Description of the World', and Gaius Julius Solinus' Polyhistor, 'Wonders of the World'. Mela's influential geography, which describes the Earth, at the centre of the universe, divided into five zones, borrowed from Greek sources and was cited by Pliny the Elder. Solinus relied heavily on the works of both Pliny and Mela in the compilation of his descriptions of curiosities of the world, organised by region. The annotations, particularly in the first two books of Mela's work, are indicative of these works being standard school texts for the study of geography. Included with Mela's text are the scholia of Valencian humanist and geographer Pedro Juan Oliver, and the commentary of Italian scholar Ermolao Barbaro. Inscription on title page ?ex bibl. Reisachiorum 1804?, the library of Reisach Monastery in Bavaria. Further ownership inscription of Andreas Möring, dated, on title page. Annotation and underlining in brown and black in different hands throughout, particularly heavy in books 1-2 of the Mela. Minor foxing. VD16 M2317. Adams M1061. Schweiger II, 608. BOCCACCIO, Giovanni
