BARREFELT, Hendrik Jansen, known as “HIËL” (illustrations by Pieter van der BORCHT).
[6], 35, [1 blank]; [1], [1 blank], 48 pp.Rare first separately published French edition of an important and influential interpretation of the stories of the Old and New Testament, in the popular form of 113 engraved illustrations by Pieter van der Borcht (1535-1608), from Mechelen, and explanatory text by the anti-denominational Dutch mystic Hendrik Jansen (van) Barrefelt, also known as "Hiël" (ca. 1530-1594?). Barrefelt initiated two series of engravings for pictorial Bibles around 1582, believing that the contemplation of the biblical images would speak to a wide audience and bring them closer to God, though he also believed that other pictorial Bibles distorted the Bible's meaning. He enlisted Van der Borcht to produce two series of etched and engraved illustrations of Bible stories and wrote brief commentaries to help people understand the images. Hamilton convincingly argues that the present series B was designed to appeal more to Protestants and the other series A to appeal more to Catholics. Hamilton calls these pictorial Bibles Barrefelt's "most successful" publications, "both in his lifetime and after."With an early owner's name partly obscured with an ink wash on the title-page. Slightly browned, a few quires with faint water stains, and an occasional marginal tear or early restoration, but still generally in good condition. The vellum of the binding is wrinkled and shows several small tears, holes and cuts, and some early repairs and restorations.l A. Hamilton, "From Familism to Pietism: the fortunes of Pieter van der Borcht's biblical illustrations and Hiël's c … [Click Below for Full Description]

PORTA, Giambattista della.
[16], 552 pp.Second edition of Porta's work on the doctrine of signatures and it is sometimes held that he was the real originator of this doctrine. Giambattista della Porta (1535-1615) believed that the external form of man indicates his internal qualities. Expanding this theory to plants, he maintained that the external form of plants reveals their internal healing powers. The plants that resemble particular parts of the body should be considered as suitable medication for illnesses in those particular body parts. "The back view of a human head with a thick crop of hair is introduced into the block with the Maidenhair Fern, which is an ancient specific for baldness; a Pomegranate with its seeds exposed, and a plant of "Toothwort," with its hard, white scale-leaves, are represented in the same figure as a set of human teeth" (Arber, p. 209). Porta also discusses the resemblance of plants and animal parts. A study of the character of the animal would provide clues to the medical qualities of the resembling plant. Phytognomonica was first published in Naples in 1588.In very good condition.l Arber, pp. 208-210; BMC NH, p. 1598; Nissen, BBI 463; VD 16, P4331; Wood, p. 522; DSB XI, pp. 95-98; cf. DORSTEN, Theodor.
[10], 306 ll.First edition of Theodor Dorsten's Latin adaptation of Eucharius Rösslin's extensive and beautifully illustrated German herbal, Kreutterbuch, first published (also by Egenolff) in 1535. It includes about 284 botanical illustrations originally cut for the Rösslin edition, many based on the pioneering naturalistic illustrations cut by Hans Weiditz for Otto Brunfels's Herbarium vivae eicones (1530-1536). Most show complete plants including roots, some show fruits or other parts of plants, and about 36 mostly smaller woodcuts (including a few repeats) show containers for the medicines or other relevant objects. Egenolff clearly saw the importance of the new and more accurate style of illustration, and engaged the best woodblock cutters to produce his blocks. While Brunfels's Herbarium had no text beyond the names of the plants, Egenolff saw the importance of combining the images with detailed botanical medical texts, first in German by Rösslin and here in Latin by Theodor Dorsten (1492-1552), a physician and professor in Marburg, Germany. The book therefore played a considerable role in bringing botanical medical knowledge to a wider public, both in Germany and abroad. Dorsten's adaptation was also further developed in German for Adam Lonitzer's Kreutterbuch in 1557. The present first edition of Dorsten is a nice piece of book production, the roman type perfectly complements the woodcuts, and the presswork is excellent.Signed above the colophon by "Remigius Ruffius" (Rémy Roussel), a French humanist active 1517-1540. Commentario de le cose de' Turchi, ...(Colophon: Rome, printed by Antonio Blado "in le case de" Gioanbatista di Massimi, 1535). 4to (20 x 14 cm). With Blado's woodcut device on title-page (repeated below the colophon). Modern blue-grey paper wrappers made with ca. 1750 materials. [84] pp. Third edition of a treatise on the origins and nature of the power of the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman victory at the battle of Mohács in Hungary (1526) spread panic through Christian Europe and the Ottoman siege of Vienna (1529), even though it finally failed, roused many Europeans to action. Giovio (1483-1552), personal physician to Pope Clement VII, wrote the present book with the anti-Ottoman campaign clearly in mind, dedicating it to the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V on 22 January 1531. "Of the various treatises written for Charles V on the Turkish menace, Giovio's was probably the most realistic, the least moralizing, and the most informative." (Price Zimmerman, p. 121). In fact, he was so willing to acknowledge and sometimes even admire the positive aspects of the Ottomans (such as their military discipline) that some Christians accused him of sympathizing with the enemy. Some early owner's marks. With small marginal restorations in the first few leaves, but in very good condition. Pioneering work on the Ottoman Empire, set in one of the most famous italic types of all time. WÄLDSEEMÜLLER, Martin.
Lyons: Melchor & Gaspar Trechsel, 1535. Coloured woodcut. Printed area 320 x 450mm. Split in lower centre fold with old repair, paper age-toned. A fine example of the Fries reduction of Wäldseemüller's Ptolemaic map of the Middle East, with Cyprus featuring prominently. Originally intended not for a Ptolemy edition but for a new 'Chronica mundi' being written by Wäldseemüller, his death c.1520 caused the project to be shelved, so the woodcuts were used to publish a smaller sized and so cheaper edition of the 'Geography'. On verso is a Latin text with other woodcuts including decorative columns. LAOR: 610; ZACHARAKIS: 1829.

ARIOSTO, Lodovico.
Venice, per Alvise Torti, 1535. Quarto (208 x 123 mm.), 244 leaves, title-page printed in red and black with woodcut portrait of Ariosto (the same used in the edition of 1532) and with an added leaf containing a contemporary manuscript index of the poem. Title-page slightly dust soiled, a few spots, a good copy in XVIII century English calf, panels ruled in blind, gilt spine in compartments with lettering piece, red edges. A good copy.Very scarce edition of this milestone of Renaissance literature. ?Edizione molto bella e rarissima' (Guidi, Annali, 25), an elegant quarto in compact double column. The handsome woodcut portrait of Ariosto which graces the titlepage printed in red and black, was borrowed from the definitive 1532 edition, published in Ferrara. It was cut after a drawing by Titian, most likely produced ad vivum as the poet was sitting for him ? ?this woodcut must therefore be regarded as the most authentic likeness' (Gronau, ?Titian's Ariosto', 197).Ariosto (1474-1533) had died in Ferrara in 1533. As an administrator and diplomat in the service of Ippolito and later Alfonso d'Este, he had been able to devote substantial time to literature, issuing the first 40 cantos of his masterpiece in 1516 and republishing them, with some linguistic revisions, in 1521. The multi-layered narrative of Orlando Furioso follows the history of the war between the Christian paladins and the Saracens, Orlando's madness at the flight of his beloved Angelica, and the love between the Christian Bradamante and the Saracen Ruggero, a subplot, this last, celebrating the d'Este family. Neuchatel: Pierre de Wingle, 1535. THERE IS A STORY BEHIND EVERY BLEMISH! Bible leaf collectors know that some leaves are hard to look at and others look as new as the day they left the printing press. The condition of a particular leaf reflects its history and is not an indication of its actual value. Perfect leaves are ones that have seen little or no use over the centuries in contrast to those that are scarred by the ravages of time. Unblemished leaves are unloved leaves because they have had little contact with sinners. Imperfect leaves tell a story. Some are torn and ripped and worn away by excessive use while others have burns or worm holes and still others are water stained by flood and sometimes even tears. Each ugly mark or stain is in fact a beautiful witness to the Word of God, which, "liveth and abideth forever." We offer Bible leaves as we acquire them letting their condition speak for themselves.
