Basel: Ioannis Frobenii. THERE IS A STORY BEHIND EVERY BLEMISH! Bible leaf collectors know that some leaves are hard to look at and others look as new as the day they left the printing press. The condition of a particular leaf reflects its history and is not an indication of its actual value. Perfect leaves are ones that have seen little or no use over the centuries in contrast to those that are scarred by the ravages of time. Unblemished leaves are unloved leaves because they have had little contact with sinners. Imperfect leaves tell a story. Some are torn and ripped and worn away by excessive use while others have burns or worm holes and still others are water stained by flood and sometimes even tears. Each ugly mark or stain is in fact a beautiful witness to the Word of God, which, "liveth and abideth forever." We offer Bible leaves as we acquire them letting their condition speak for themselves. DURAND, Guillaume
I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. William Durand was a 13th-century French liturgist and canonist known for his important canonical treatises, including 'Rationale Divinorum Officiorum'. This work was first written while Durand was in Italy, and was written as a symbolism of Christian ritual. It portrays what liturgy was like during the 13th-century in relation to churchmen, structure of ceremonies, and the physical layout of church. Composed in eight distinct books, 'Rationale' also deals with the hierarchy of church officials, liturgical clothes, acceptable furniture in the church, the divine office, and the holy mass. Today, 'Rationale' is considered one of the main authorities on medieval Western liturgies. This 1519 edition was published in Venice and is considered exceedingly rare. It is bound in modern embossed leather in the style of 16th-century master printers - binding features functioning clasps. [Attributes: First Edition]

Cranach, Lucas (1472-1553); published by Scheffers, Johannes (1789-1817/20)
"Broadside print featuring as central plate an original woodcut by Lucas Cranach. The plate represents St. Catherine reading from a book. As from the inscription on the wheel resting on the ground on the left, the woodcut dates from 1519. Titled above: ""Een geestelyke Minne-Zang ... haar Opperste BRUIDEGOM."" The text of the song is arranged in five columns. According to the subtitle, the song could have been performed with the same tune of: ""o' Holland schoon gy leeft in Vreé, enz."". Address at the bottom: ""Gedrukt te Rotterdam, by JOHANNES SCHEFFERS, Boekdrukker in de Prinsestraat""."."Woodcut and letterpress on paper; total: 522 x 403 mm; creases due to folding, small hole where two creases meet, on the upper quarter of the print; slightly yellowing paper in good condition. Urban IV (Pope, 1261?1264).
[Paris]: Venundatur ab Jodoco Badio et Joanne de Prato, 1519. 8vo (12.8 cm, 5"). [24] ff. Apparently the first and only (?) edition of this exposition on "Miserere mei Deus," the Penitential Psalm (50 according to Septuagint numbering, 51 in Masoretic numbering), from the pen of Urban IV (1195?–1264, as pope 1261–64). Each phrase — or sometimes only a word — of the Psalm is printed in large roman, immediately moving to small gothic for the commentary. The => small, pocket- or sleeve-sized book comes from the press of France's first scholar-printer, Josse Bade. Badius's first printer's device (Renouard, Marques, 22, depicting a print shop) fills most of the title-page and a second woodcut, full-page, appears on the verso of the same, being a representation of the Resurrection presented with rich texture: Christ's sepulchre, from which he rises, is set behind an altar upon which the Eucharist is being celebrated by a kneeling pope with two attendants; Christ is "attended" by instruments of his Passion including Peter's cock, and the image's top corners incorporate devices suggesting the descending dove of the Holy Spirit. Binding: Jansenist-style red morocco, signed "A. Devauchelle." Single gilt rule on board edges; handsome, wide, gilt-tooled turn-ins; French combed marbled paper endpapers. All edges gilt. Provenance: From the library of American collector Albert A. Howard, small booklabel ("AHA") at rear. Searches of NUC, WorldCat, COPAC, BP16, and KVK locate only seven libraries worldwide reporting ownership; none of those libraries being in the U.S. Re … [Click Below for Full Description]

VERA CRUZ].
[ca late 18th-century]. 2 sheets joined (14 x 37 inches), laid down on linen. A FINE AND DETAILED MANUSCRIPT MAP OF THE COAST OF THE VERACRUZ REGION OF MEXICO, pen and ink and colour wash in full, showing the area from Alvarado to Heroica Vera Cruz, with all islands, including the Fort of San Juan de Ulua, soundings, rivers and hills, the title and explanation within a frame upper right, insets of the fortifications at the entrance to the Alvarado River and Mocambo to the southeast of Veracruz, lower left (some expert repairs to verso with the occasional addition of manuscript facsimile). An early Spanish map, dating to the last years of the 18th-century, of the Veracruz region which the Spanish had held since Cortes landed in 1519. The emphasis of this map is the fortifications at Alvarado, Mocambo and Vera Cruz. Which is not surprising as Spanish rule of the Yucatan Peninsular would come to an end in the opening decades of the 19th-century, with Mexican Independence in 1821, preceded by the bitter fighting between the British, French and Spanish forces from about 1792 onward. Spain conquered the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlán, now Mexico City, by 1521 and the Inca capital, Cuzco, by 1535. Both the Aztecs and the Incas had amassed a staggering wealth in exquisite gold and silver objects, which the conquistadors under Hernando Cortés in Mexico set about plundering immediately. Spain quickly established the viceroyalties of New Spain, based in Veracruz, and Peru, and by the mid-1500s Spanish galleons loaded with treasure sailed annually from Veracruz for Europe, frequently be … [Click Below for Full Description]

1519. Spain quickly established the viceroyalties of New Spain, based in Veracruz, and Peru, and by the mid-1500s Spanish galleons loaded with treasure sailed annually from Veracruz for Europe, frequen … [Click Below for Full Description]

DURAND, Guillaume
1519 EXQUISITE Durand Rationale Divinorum Medieval Church Liturgy Ceremonies William Durand was a 13th-century French liturgist and canonist known for his important canonical treatises, including ‘Rationale Divinorum Officiorum’. This work was first written while Durand was in Italy, and was written as a symbolism of Christian ritual. It portrays what liturgy was like during the 13th-century in relation to churchmen, structure of ceremonies, and the physical layout of church. Composed in eight distinct books, ‘Rationale’ also deals with the hierarchy of church officials, liturgical clothes, acceptable furniture in the church, the divine office, and the holy mass. Today, ‘Rationale’ is considered one of the main authorities on medieval Western liturgies. This 1519 edition was published in Venice and is considered exceedingly rare. It is bound in modern embossed leather in the style of 16th-century master printers – binding features functioning clasps.
Jacob Cromberger, Seville, 1519. Folio (271 x 198 mm), ff. [75], with a large woodcut of a sphere within woodcut border on title, and two diagrams in the text; bound without the final blank; the early leaves with old foliation in ink; the chronological list on f. 25 extended in ink to include Spanish kings up to the 18th century; the early leaves very gently cleaned; a very few minor marginal repairs and a few wormholes filled in; bound in 18th-century Spanish vellum, spine lettered in ink. A VERY ATTRACTIVE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST BOOK PRINTED IN SPANISH RELATING TO AMERICA, THE FIRST PRACTICAL GUIDE TO SAILING IN AMERICAN WATERS, AND THE FIRST NAVIGATIONAL MANUAL PRINTED IN SPAIN. ‘Enciso’s Suma de geographía (1519) is one of the cornerstones of Spanish cartographic and navigational literature in the first half of the sixteenth century. Although the book is known today mainly for containing the first printed description of America in Spanish, the Suma was in fact a synthesis of the geographic knowledge of all the known world’ (Andrès Prieto in: Hispanic Review, Vol. 78 (2010), p. 169). ‘Fernández de Enciso (ca.1470-ca.1528) was one of the earliest settlers in Santo Domingo, the capital of Hispaniola, where he practiced law and participated actively in sea expeditions. The Suma attempts to cover the world’s geography, but its most valuable information is the chapter on the West Indies. The word "America" was here used for the first time in a Spanish printed text . Using a great variety of both oral and written sources plus his own experience, Enciso compiled … [Click Below for Full Description]

Biel, Gabriel; Peter Lombard
Lyons: Johann Clein, 1519. Lyons: Johann Clein. Good with no dust jacket. 1519. Vellum. A post-incunable edition of Gabriel Biel's most important work, a commentary on the "Sentences" of Peter Lombard, four volumes bound in two, in full vellum, with a large, beautiful medieval manuscript used as part of the binding in the first volume, which also has a woodcut title page printed in red and black. The work is in two volumes, both small folios measuring 11.75" x 8". The vellum is limp, contemporary vellum showing the marks of missing ties. The spines appear to be contemporary, as well, but are crudely attached with handsome old hand-written titles to the spine with a small decorative flourish. The end papers for the first volume have been constructed out of a large manuscript vellum leaf with three beautiful red initial "O"s with blue trailing decoration. The manuscript is interesting and quite scarce. It is a text with commentary and appears to be from an early 1400s copy of Giles of Rome's Theoremata de Esse et Essencia. Giles of Rome (Latin: Aegidius Romanus; c. 1243 - 22 December 1316), was an archbishop of Bourges who was famed for his logician commentary on the Organon by Aristotle. Giles was styled Doctor Fundatissimus ("Best-Grounded Teacher") by Pope Benedict XIV. He was Prior General of the Augustinian order and it is likely that Giles was a student of Thomas Aquinas during the period between 1269 and 1272. He began many of his commentaries on the works of Aristotle during the 1270s. The text of the manuscript is in 13 lines and the comme … [Click Below for Full Description]

PANTHEUS [or PANTHEO, or PANTEO], Giovanni Agostino
Tacuino, [Venice, 1519. First edition of one of the greatest rarities in the alchemical and chemical literature; this is an exceptionally interesting copy, bound with twelve leaves of contemporary script conveying an all-encompassing 'tree of human endeavours', charting the features and visually suggesting the relative position of human faculties and of most fields of knowledge, an extraordinarily wide-ranging array that includes disciplines such as economics and politics amongst more traditional trivium and quadrivium 'artes', and of course alchemy. "Pantheus wrote against spurious alchemy and he deals partly with the assay of gold and partly with the chemical preparation of various substances which were made at Venice in his time and were used in the arts. He describes, for example, the manufacture of white lead and of an alloy for mirrors. Pantheus was a priest at Venice, but seems nevertheless to have been devoted to chemical research" (Ferguson). It has only been recognised in the present century that the Ars transmutationis metallicae is also an important, and very early, contribution to atomism, the precursor to modern atomic theory. Emil Offenbacher, the most important dealer in alchemy and chemistry books of the last century, described the first edition of this book as "almost unobtainable today" (his Cat. 37 (1985), item 137, in which he described the 1550 edition). The greatest collector of early chemistry books of the past century, Roy G. Neville, never found a copy. ABPC/RBH list just one copy in the last 80 years (and that in a modern binding). OCLC lists thre … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ils sont tous les deux en seconde édition. Théodore de Beze (Vezelay 1519 - Genève 1604) fut une des grandes figures de la France protestante. Athanasius, Saint, Patriarch of Alexandria.
Joanne Paruo [i.e., Jean Petit], 1519. [also bound in]: Basil, Saint, Bishop of Caesarea. Basilii Magni Caesariensium in Cappadocia Antistitis sanctissimi opera plane diuina, variis e locis sedulo collecta: & accuratio[n]e ac impe[n]sis Iodici Badii Ascésii recognita & coimpressa, quorum index proxima pandetur charta. [Paris: Venundantur eidem Ascensio [i.e., Badius Ascensius, 1520]. Folio extra. [10], 178 ff. Two editions of Church Fathers from two scholar/printer presses. St. Athanasius's text was translated into Latin by three noted Renaissance scholars, edited by Nicholas Beraldus, and has the added prestige of apparatus by Erasmus. The title-page is printed with a four-piece woodcut border, with the title in red and black, and bears the famous Petit printer's device. => The text enjoys handsome typography, side- and shouldernotes, and large woodcut initials. The works of St. Basil is from Badius Ascensius's press and he acted as the editor, the translators having been Johannes Argyropoulos, Georgius Trapezuntius, and others. The title-page uses the same four-part woodcut title-page border as found on the St. Athanasius, bound in at the front, which makes much sense given the familial relationship between Ascensius and Petit.

VALERIUS FLACCUS
folio, [10], 189, [18] ff., colophon on Ii3 with device (Kristeller 10), lacking blank Ii4 but with the 18 ff. of Orpheus Latinus following, repair in inner margin of title, small defect to margins of last few leaves, a very clean & crisp copy, 18th-cent. vellumPartly editio princeps: Pius prints three new books, as well as his own continuation. E.Courtney in his preface to the Teubner text (1970) calls this the most important of the early editions: Pius was the first to use the codex Vaticanus, which has lost 5 leaves since his time, and made many useful emendations; he was also the first to unite the Argonautica of Valerius Flaccus and of 'Orpheus', the two classicall poems on the legend of the Golden Fleece. The book has long been known to be rare. Burmann, in his edition (1724) relates how Heinsius sought a copy for years, and rejoiced when he found one. Today there is no copy in BL or Cambridge: COPAC reports at Manchester and Bodley. The Abrams copy, back in 1989, made £2500. Burmann mentions that when found the book tends to lack the Orpheus Latinus at the end (he claims that in his day it was abstracted and sold as an incunable). Some 30 years ago just such a copy passed through our hands, and we are pleased that our present copy of this legendary rarity is complete.
