SOME GERMAN WOODCUTS OF THE FIFTEENTH CENTURY.
Hammersmith, Kelmscott Press, 1897.Thirty - five reproductions from printed books in the library of William Morris, 1897. Slim 4to, approximately 300 x 215 mm, 12 x 8½ inches, pages: xi, 23 leaves illustrating woodcuts with some text, printed and numbered on rectos only, then pages 24 - 36 and last leaf with colophon, Kelmscott monogram. Printed in red and black in Golden type, bound in plain dark blue cloth of the period, cut out paper title mounted on upper cover, edges untrimmed. Binding a little rubbed and scratched with a few small indentations to upper cover, head of spine bumped, first page of the woodcuts has a shallow crease to lower corner, a few other light creases to margins of pages with woodcuts, not affecting images, edges of pages have slight rippling, pale age - browning to endpapers, otherwise a clean crisp copy. NOT IN THE ORIGINAL KELMSCOTT BINDING. Of these thirty - five reproductions twenty - nine were all that were done of a series chosen by Mr. Morris to illustrate a catalogue of his library, and the other six were prepared by him for an article in the 4th number of Bibliographica, part of which is reprinted as an introduction to the book. The process blocks (with one exception) were made by Walker & Boutall, and are of the same size as the original cuts. Limited edition of 225 copies plus 8 vellum copies, the limitation not printed in the book. See Willan Peterson, A Bibliography of the Kelmscott Press, pages 131 - 134, No. A49. The binding is of the time and the paper label looks like paper and type used by the Kelmscott Press. According to Peterson the book sold out and many customers were disappointed so it could have been a rejected copy due to a crease in the margin of the first illustration? Obviously this is speculation. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE, FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST.
