Autograph letter signed to Arthur Lambton
15 Buckingham Place Mansions: 30 June. One page in Conan Doyle's Buckingham Place Mansions letterhead. Housed in a quarter blue morocco slipcase. Folded for mailing and with a couple of short tears at the fold. Excellent. An interesting letter addressed to the criminologist and author Arthur Lambton. Doyle congratulates Lambton on his latest book and gives a brief critique and a few suggestions for improvements. An association of the first order. Lambton and Doyle were friends and associates for more than 30 years. Principally through their affiliation with the Crimes Club (later Our Society) founded by Henry Irving in 1903 as an institution devoted to the scholarly discussion of matters criminal. Early members of this exclusive club included George Sims, A. E. W. Mason, P. G. Wodehouse and Arthur Lambton. Doyle himself joined in 1904 and became one of the prime movers. His work on behalf of Oscar Slater and the intervention in the Edalji case was founded in discussions by members of the Crimes Club. Lambton himself is a somewhat mysterious figure. He published several important and well-regarded works on true crime and presided over the Crimes Club for 32 years.
