[ALBUM OF ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS SHOWING THE SEVENTH NEW YORK INFANTRY PATROLLING THE TEXAS BORDER DURING THE MEXICAN REVOLUTION AND TRAINING IN SOUTH CAROLINA FOR WORLD WAR I SERVICE]
McAllen, Tx.; Spartanburg, S.C., 1917. 72 silver gelatin photographs, most approximately 2 1/4 x 3 1/4 inches, plus two photo postcards. Oblong octavo. Black cloth album. Photos mounted directly to black card stock, with a few laid in. Several leaves chipped, first two leaves detached. Slight curling and mirroring to some images. About very good. A lively album of vernacular photographs compiled by a member of Company M of the 7th New York Infantry from when the unit was station along the Texas border at McAllen during the Mexican Revolution and when it was training for service in World War I in South Carolina. Forty of the images in the album depict the company in McAllen, Texas, and the remaining thirty-two show them at Camp Wadsworth in Spartanburg, South Carolina. New York's 7th Regiment was called up from the National Guard and reached the Texas-Mexico border in July, 1916. More military units followed, and the force at McAllen eventually numbered 10,000 soldiers. The photographs contained here show the men on patrol along the border, riding horses, posing with civilians and around the city, handling rattlesnakes, and performing exercises. Other images show the men in their tents, horsing around and gambling, and standing by the Rio Grande. One of the photo postcards shows a group of Mexican generals, including Pancho Villa. The South Carolina pictures document some of the same activities, with more emphasis on training exercises, camp activities, and group photographs. Many of the images from this period are captioned in manuscript on the versos. After its training was complete, the regiment was sent to Belgium and France, where it served with distinction. An engaging photograph album that unites two of the major American military concerns of the period.
