The United States Criminal Calendar: Or, An Awful Warning to the Youth of America; Being an Account of Murders, Piraces, Highway Robberies, &c. &c
Boston: Charles Gaylord, 1835. 1835 edition, first published 1832. Book intended to scare youngsters, but may very well have had the opposite effect in creating a fascination with mankind's dark side. This is a rather sad copy, with nine leaves missing (pages 165-182) from the middle of the book, starting with a portion of the story of Samuel Tully and ending with a portion of the story of Moses Adams, the missing pages also covering Michael Powers and Alpheus Livermore and Samuel Angier. Includes thieves, murderers, thugs, pirates, arsonists, mutineers and other unsavory characters, also with a section on The Salem Witchcraft. Illustrated throughout with engravings, several of a violent nature, including ten of the fifteen called for on the title page, with a blank page in the Salem Witchcraft section where no doubt an engraving should have been included. Printed boards with tan cloth spine, 356 pages with the aforementioned pages wanting. Covers soiled worn, rubbed and with some peeling, text block separating, pages age-toned and foxed with much margin wear and small chips, front endpapers and preliminary blanks torn and soiled, small portion missing from the frontis engraving. A rough and incomplete copy.. Hard Cover. Poor. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
