The Natural History of British Insects; explaining them in their several states, with the periods of their transformations, their food, oeconomy, &c Together with the History of Such Minute Insects as require investigation by the Microscope Vols I-X
London : Printed for the Author and for F. and C.Rivington, 1792 A fair copy of Vols I-X of the 1st edition of this beautiful and rare work, first issued in 10 volumes. Classed as fair because the text pages, particularly in the first 7 volumes are very browned and spotty. This is partly because there are no tissue guards, but is also because there must have been a problem with the paper. The plate paper has some toning and occasional marking, but the plates are generally well coloured and clean. With 357 of 360 plates. The half leather binding has contemporary marbled boards with newer spines, which have gilt compartments, titles and volume numbers. It is in good to very good condition. All volumes have a bookplate of 'Chr Pegge Eq Aur Med Prof Reg Oxon' to the front pastedown. Vol I: 1792, 80pp with index 6pp; 36 plates. Vol II: 1793, 96pp with index 2pp, errata 1p, 36 plates. Vol III: 1794, 97pp with index 6pp and errata 1p, 36 plates. Vol IV: 1795, 96pp with index 6pp, 36 plates, small piece missing from index page margin. Vol V: 1796, 110pp with index 6pp and errata 1p, missing plate173. Contains letter to subscribers about a new tax duty which will mean an alteration in the way that issues are produced. Vol VI: 1797, 86pp, 35 plates - missing pl 191 and associated text. Small repaired tears to bottom margin of 3 pages. Vol VII: 1798, 96pp with 7pp index, 35 plates - missing pl 238. Some offsetting from text to plate 251. Vol VIII: 1799, starts with title page for the series, thanks to Linnean Society, advert and contents listing for the 10 volumes. 86pp with 5pp index, 36 plates - a much cleaner volume. Vol IX: 1800, 78pp with index 4pp, advert and address 1p, 36 plates - pl 322 has some remains from the original wrap, a cleaner volume. Vol X: 1801, 95pp, index 7pp, 36 plates, some wrap remains on plates 344 and 345 gutters. Staining to upper corner p 93 and through index.
