First edition. A mixed state with no page numbers on the last page of each chapter in signatures A through D (there are numbers on the last page of each chapter in signatures E to I). Volume eight of the eighteen-volume "Wessex Novels" edition published between 1895 and 1913, five of which were first editions as well. Hardy's last and best-selling novel with 20,000 copies sold within six weeks of publication. "The horrors of his own creation in this, the last of his stories, perhaps turned Hardy away from novel-writing to poetry" - OCEL, p. 422. Damp stains to cloth along fore-edges, less so to rear fore-edge, a very good copy with bright cover stamping and clean interior. (#133137)
