Elements of Conchology; an Introduction to the Natural History of Shells and the Animals which form them
London: Published by the Author [Lovell Reeve], 1860 A good copy of this scarce work in 2 volumes with 62 hand coloured plates by G B Sowerby and Miller. Lovell Reeve was a noted conchologist and publisher. Probably rebound in half leather for Reginald Coddington - whose bookplates are on the feps, with a dedication to his wife - Grace Coddington on the front pastedowns dated 1906. The bindings have some light marking to the cloth but the leather is in very good condition - with gilt lining and gilt decorative compartments and titles to spine. Endpapers marbled and with top page edges gilt. Vol I: half title; title page 1860; preliminaries i-viii; text 260pp; plates A-H (living animals); plates 1-21 (shells). Vol II: half title; title page 1860; contents; text pp 1-203 including index; plates I-Q (living animals); plates 22 - 46 (shells - numbering varies from latin to arabic numerals). Vol I with brown spotting to preliminaries, title pages and occasionally to text. Plates 1-5 with foxing. Plates do not have tissue guards. Vol II a little wear to the top of the spine at the join with the front board. Contents - spotting to preliminaries and title pages; text very clean; plates generally clean and bright but some browning/spotting to plates M, N, XXIV-XXVI, and XLIII-XLVI. Plates do not have tissue guards.
