FIRST EDITION, VOLUME I ONLY OF TWO, (Volume II continued the history of England to the reign of Elizabeth I). At London, Imprinted [by Henry Bynneman] for George Bishop, 1577. Folio, 295 x 200 mm, 11¾ x 8 inches, GENERAL TITLE PAGE MISSING (supplied in facsimile), TITLE PAGE FOR IRELAND MISSING, Scotland is present (Ireland was the same design) with a wide decorative border, a mermaid, lion heads, fruit and plants, an angel at the top and beneath 1577, at the foot "God save the Queene", text in black letter in 2 columns, NUMEROUS WOODCUTS, large historiated initials, leaves [3 of 8], 124 [i.e. 126]; pages 289, [1]; [8], 22, [2]; 518, [26] ; leaves [1 of 2], 28; pages 115, [7 of 9]; signatures 6 (- 1-5), *2 A-P8, Q6, (r1) (-r1), a-s8, t1; A2, (*b*)2, *a*-*b*6, A-2I8, 2K4, 2L-2M6; [fleuron]2 (-[fleuron]1), A-C8, D4; A-D8, E8 (-E6-8), F-G8, H6, I2 (-I2), [K]1. Text of the chronicles is complete. Missing from prelims: general title page, dedication to Lord Burleigh, Preface to the Reader, missing also are r1 ( errata page which follows Description of England), (fleuron)1 (title page to Chronicle of Ireland), and the final page of the index to the History of Ireland. Bound to style in full modern calf, blind panelled to upper cover with blind ornaments at the corners, large embossed decorative ornament at the centre, raised band to spine, small blind ornament in compartments, gilt lettered morocco label, new endpapers. The first two leaves, 6 and *1 have repairs to upper outer corner with no loss, 6 repaired in inner margin also, *2 slightly chipped to upper margin, small hole in inner margin of fo.1, slight pale damp staining to first and last few leaves, occasional small stains, several tiny single worm holes from the first leaf to fo. 20, a single hole persisting to fo.42, no loss of legibility, another single hole from page 35 - 81 (Hist. of Ireland) where it is joined by a second one and by 3 more on the final errata leaf, all still easily legible, small piece missing from 3 lower corners, top corner of fo.73 (Hist. England) torn off partially affecting last word on 7 lines and 1 sidenote, a few upper margins trimmed, just shaving some running titles, some fore-edges also slightly trimmed, fo.289 has small repair to lower corner, 3 slightly untidy ink initials to title page of Scotland, small black stain on 1 woodcut (printer's ink), small light stain on another, a little scribble in 2 margins, 2 tiny rust holes to 1 leaf with loss of 2 letters, leaves of final table for Hist. of Ireland have some repairs to fore-edge margins with loss of a few letters and brown marks of old sellotape, now removed, final errata leaf has repair to lower inner corner and inner margin again with old sellotape marks. A good tight, mostly clean, copy of the first edition of Volume I (lacking 2 title pages, 4 prelim leaves, an errata page and 1 page of index as noted). As in ESTC S119439 E6-8 in the second sequence in Hist. of Ireland were cancelled, and replaced with cancellans F1-7, pages 75-91; cancel F7 has 2 states, ours is the second beginning: "the chiefe meanes". The 3 sections on the 3 countries are divided into a description of the country plus its history. Woodcuts appear on most pages, there are small portraits of kings and queens, many large 2 column cuts of varying height, battle scenes, sieges, towns ablaze, duels, cruel punishments, a guillotine, warships, hunting, court and street scenes, building churches, harvesting; many repeated, some several times.
