Signed by Andrew Jackson during his illustrious service during the War of 1812
"Manuscript Document Signed, ""Andrew Jackson,"" 1 page, 7.75"" x 6.5"", [Near Natchez], March 19, 1813, acknowledging a Provision return ""for Captain Kavanaugh"". Additionally signed by Capt. Charles Kavanaugh (""C. Kavanaugh Capt. Of Cavalry""). Light creases, light toning, else very good condition with a fine, dark, and early example of Jackson's signature. Jackson endorses a return for rations issued to Kavanaugh's company of cavalry from the 1st to the 12th of March, 1813. Jackson had led an expedition down the Mississippi to Natchez with orders to reinforce New Orleans in the event of a British attack. However, when Jackson arrived there, he received word from General Wilkinson, to proceed no further, as there were not adequate quarters for Jackson's volunteers there. In late March, Jackson received word from the War Department dismissing Jackson and his army from further service. However, no provision was made for the army's return to Tennessee. During the hard, overland journey, Jackson's fortitude and leadership earned him the nickname: ""Old Hickory."" Nearly two years later, Jackson would return to New Orleans, where he would be immortalized for his heroic performance defeating the British attack on that city. Charles Kavanaugh served as a Captain in Col. John Coffee's Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry which joined Jackson's force in early 1813 with a strength of approximately 600 men. After rendezvousing near Franklin, Tennessee, the regiment marched overland to Natchez in mid-January 1813. Many members of this regiment became part of a unit by Colonels Alcorn and Dyer during Jackson's first campaign against the Creeks in the fall of 1813. Kavanaugh later served with Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans. "
