Dallas, Texas:: A Bee Press,, 2011.. One-of-a-Kind. 64 x 53" open. Mixed media fiber collage/quilt. Materials: cottons, linen, pigment prints, graphite, ink, marker. Processes: discharge dyed, hand and machine sewn, hand quilted. Signed by the artist. Alisa Banks: "Continuum features stories about growing up on a farm in southern Louisiana as told by my mother. Due to my dad's job, I grew up away from my parents' hometown, but my siblings and I remained close to our cousins, aunts, and uncles. My parents often told stories about their childhood and spoke to each other in Creole, which to us was like their 'secret' language. The quilt features various random Creole words I remember hearing while growing up. "Continuum is a modified strip quilt. The bands were placed in a haphazard fashion. The various fonts and sizes of the bands represent the deliberate manner in which the walls of many shotgun style-cabins throughout the American South were papered, which harkens to utilizing random patterning in order to ward of bad spirits as practices in some ancient African societies.
