London: H. F. & G. Witherby,, 1935.. The Voyage of the "Vigilant" to Cocos Island. Octavo. Original blue boards, titles to spine in orange, bottom edge untrimmed. With the dust jacket. Photographic frontispiece with tissue guard, 5 similar plates, fold-out map, cartographic plate. Spine sunned, boards slightly marked, one plate loose, some rubbing and a couple of nicks to dust jacket. A very good copy. First edition, first impression. With the second impression dust jacket. Publisher's file copy, with their bookplate to front pastedown. Commander James Plumpton recounts a voyage in which "a party of nine, including the author, sailed a converted 50-ton Brixham trawler to Cocos Island by way of the Panama Canal...On reaching Cocos Island they found an expedition with a three-year exclusive treasure hunting permit from the Costa Rican government already at work. After extended negotiations, the two expeditions joined forces. Their search, made under very difficult conditions, was unsuccessful" (Toy). The vessel was sold in Punta Arenas and the crew made their own ways home, with Plumpton himself still believing the elusive treasure to be buried on the island, somewhere near the high-water mark. Like many Witherby titles, this volume concludes with a chapter offering practical advice on the matter at hand - in this case, treasure-hunting. With a preface by Admiral Alexander Victor Campbell, who writes that the author "served me gallantly and well in the Dardanelles Campaign and elsewhere.
