Draeger, 1886-1966
Paris: Draeger Frères, 1965. Significant edgewear, extensive chipping to spine edges, else very good in photo-illustrated extended french flaps. Tattered publisher's bellyband laid in, with crisp original reader reply card.. Square Quarto. First Edition. Unheralded company book by Draeger Fères, the famed French printer known for working with artists such as Matisse and Bill Brandt. In this highly produced book, focus is on the creative commercial art potential of Draeger's photography laboratories. Made apparently for an American market shortly after merging with a New York advertising agency, the book is a tour of mostly European fine art from Impressionism to Pop. However, rather than simply reproduce photos of the artwork, the company's photographers and lab developers labored to create unique, highly manipulated photo images that each pay homage to a particular artist or style. Though created to show off the the creative and design potential of Draeger Fères to potential clients, the book becomes a sort of history of the twentieth century filtered through the lens of an emerging underground psychedelic graphic language. Concludes with tipped in photo illustration of a three year old Nicolas Draeger, extending his arms to the future.
