General Washington invites Colonel Ward to dinner
[New Jersey?] "Partial Autograph Document unsigned, one page, 6.5? x 2.75?. No place, no date. Three vertical folds pass through text. Light soiling. On laid paper. Affixed to a page of identical size. Fine condition. In full, ?eral Washington presents his compliments / Colo. Ward requests the favour of his company / dinner to day 3 oClock / Saturday morning.? Light show-through from mounted verso, faintly visible: ?Colo. Ward / at / Mr. Crook.? Probably penned by a member of Gen. Washington?s staff.Colo. Ward was most probably Colonel Joseph Ward (1737-1812) who was appointed Aide-de-Camp on the staff of Gen. Artemas Ward and saw action during the Battle of Bunker Hill. Ward served on Gen. Ward?s staff until March 20, 1777, when Gen. Ward?s health forced his resignation from the army. On April 10, 1777, Joseph Ward was elected by Congress as Commissary General of Musters with the rank of Colonel in the Army of the United States. This invitation could have been sent in early Summer, 1778, when both Gen. Washington and Col. Ward were in New Jersey. In the Fall of 1778, Col. Ward was taken prisoner in New Jersey and was confined by the British in Flatbush (today, Brooklyn), Long Island. Released from prison, Col. Ward was appointed by Congress as Commissary General of Prisoners on April 15, 1780, but declined because he had not fully recovered from his imprisonment."
