According to an ownership inscription on front fly-leaf, the two corresponding works were combined by Emmanuel Tronquois (1855-1918), a pioneer of Japanese art history. Gabelentz (the elder,1807-74) was one of the most ingenious linguists of his time, besides Mandju he studied Mongolian, Calmuc, Finnish, the languages of North American Indians and of South Pacific tribes. - Cordier, Sinica, col. 2756; Lust, no. 1072 (the grammar); not in Löwendahl. - Binding a bit rubbed. Foxing to the grammar (stronger at both ends), a pencil exercise of Mandju characters on p. 3/4. A waterstain to upper blank margin at end of the vocabulary. A very good copy.
