A Criticism on the Elegy Written in a Country Church-Yard. Being a Continuation of Dr. Johnson's Criticism on the Poem of Gray. Second Edition
Printed for John Ballantyne for Longman Hurst Rees and Orme London. Second edition; the first was published in 1783.. Bookseller's description pasted to the front paste-down; slight foxing; boards a little worn, with some loss at the head of the spine; very good copy.. NCBEL II, 580 & 1153; cf Rothschild 2624; Courtney, page 138. 8vo, original gray boards and printed paper label, untrimmed. An imitation (or parody of sorts) of Johnson's criticism of the poetry of Thomas Gray, written as if it were by Johnson himself. Soon after publication it was discovered this was the work of a professor of Greek at Glasgow, John Young (1750-1820). Boswell said it was "the most perfect imitation of Johnson." Inscribed in ink on the front free endpaper ?Pat. Stuart / By Professor Young of Glasgow.? Leather bookplate of Arthur Gordon Ripley, Denver, on the front paste-down.
