Down and Out In Paris And London
New York: Harper and Brothers, Publishers, 1933. Octavo, 292 pages. First American Edition. A fictionalized account of Orwell's time as a dishwasher in Paris and a tramp in London. The book was thrust into the food writing world when Anthony Bourdain declared it a favorite book and an inspiration for his Kitchen Confidential. An indulgent kitchen staff is nothing new, as Orwell notes, "the power of swallowing quarts of wine, and then sweating it out before it can do much damage, is one of the compensations of [this] life." Small bookplate to the undecorated side of the free front endpaper, otherwise very good. Lacking the scarce dust jacket, but a facsimile jacket us supplied, just for fun.
