From document No. 1 (Major Robert Anderson's letter of 9 Jan 1861 to the Governor of South Carolina questioning the firing of Charleston artillery batteries upon to US flagged vessels) through No. 17 (Mr. Hayne's final letter to President James Buchanan via the Secretary of War regarding the possession of Fort Sumter, which was returned unsigned but included a curt message in the President's handwriting that read, "The character of this letter is such that it cannot be received. . . " ) P&W 4040. From the estate of a descendant of Thomas Young Simons, a signer of the South Carolina Ordinance of Secession. Previously bound.
