London, John Lane; Boston, Roberts Bros.,, 1895. Octavo. Original purple cloth, titles to spine and upper board in white. Spine rolled, boards bowed, a little bubbling to cloth, spine and edges of boards browned, front hinge cracked and previously repaired, foxing to endpapers and occasionally contents, which are a little tanned. A very good copy. First edition of the author's first book, with cover and title page design by Aubrey Beardsley. A scarce book containing three celebrated mystery stories: The Race of Orven, The Stone of the Edmundsbury Monks, The S. S.. George Locke recorded a copy inscribed by Shiel in 1924, "A trinity here: the first about a father, the second about a son, or scion, the third about a ghostly hole… But there is no detective but THE detective and father of detectives, the 'Dupin' of Poe, of whom this Zaleski is a legitimate son, and the notorious Holmes a bastard son".
