First edition of all but Poems (third edition). xxviii, 258, [2, ads]; [ii]-xli, [iii], 344; xxii, [ii], 398, [2, ads]; [ii]-xxiv, 326; [ii]-viii, 353, [1], [2, ads] pp., lacking half titles to Borough and Tales of the Hall. 5 vols. 8vo. A finely-bound set of first and early editions of the major later poetical works of George Crabbe (1754-1832). Includes a first edition of The Borough, tales of village life told in a series of letters in heroic couplets. Letter XXII recounts the tale of the child-murderer Peter Grimes and was the source of the libretto for Benjamin Britten's opera of the same name. Hayward 196 (for The Borough).
