Full title: Chinese Sculpture from the Fifth to the Fourteenth Century, over 900 specimens in stone, bronze, lacquer and wood, principally from northern China. With descriptions and an introductory essay by Osvald Sirén. Complete in four volumes. Vol. I, Text; Vol. II, Plates 1-205; Vol. III, Plates 206-421; Vol. IV, Plates 422-623. Please note that Vols. I, III and IV are published by Ernest Benn, London, 1925, whereas Vol II is published by Charles Scribner's Sons, NY, 1925. The bindings are identical although the Scribner's volume states "Scribners" at the tail of the spine rather than "Benn." Author's preface dated New Year 1925. Printed in Great Britain by the Mayflower Press, Plymouth, except that the collotype plates were printed in France under the direction of Ernest Benn Ltd.'s continental department. Bound in Great Britain by William Brendon & Son. Contemporary cocoa brown buckram bindings, with crisp gilt-stamped sculpture design to the front boards and with faded gilt-stamped lettering to the spines. The bindings are generally clean but scuffed and rubbed, especially along the edges. Moderately bumped spine heads and tails, with minor to moderate abrasion. Also with minor to moderate bumping/abrasion to the corners. Vol. II with a 2 inch fabric split at the very top of the front gutter. Vol. IV with three 2 inch horizontal shallow gouges to the front board, not tearing the buckram; a cosmetic issue only. All text blocks firmly bound in. Tidewater mark at the bottom edge of Vol. II and at the top and bottom edges of Vol. III. Small folio. 12.5 x 9 inches. Vol. I with cli and 168 numbered pages. Vol. II with a separate page for each of 205 plates. Also separate pages for each of the plates in Vols. III and IV. All plates in B&W on heavy stock. Mild foxing to the preliminaries of Vol. I. Vol. II with very small red seal of bookseller to the rear pastedown. Vol. IV with "LYONS" in small ink hand to the front pastedown and small red "chop mark" to the front FEP. Else a generally clean set of four volumes. Respectfully read. A Very Good Minus set. Scarce in any condition. A set of this same edition went for a final auction price of $40,000 (hammer price plus commission) on 13 Sep. 2012 at Christie's NY. That set was known to be from the personal library of C. T. Loo. Sirén later referred to this work as, "my well known repertory Chinese Sculpture from the Fifth to the Fourteenth Century, vols. I-IV, London, 1925, ..... the illustrations in this work are often useful for the comparative analysis of style on which our classifications are based." Page 9, Chinese Sculptures in the von der Heydt Collection.. First British Edition. Buckram. Very Good Minus. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall.
