Mules and Men
Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott Company. Near Fine in Good dj. 1935. First Edition. Hardcover. [solid, clean book with only light shelfwear to bottom edge; the jacket is somewhat darkened with age, with some minor paper loss at several corners and spine ends, some surface-scraping across the title on the front panel but no impact to the Covarrubias illustration; the jacket has also undergone some internal repair and reinforcement -- NOT restoration -- by a professional conservator]. (10 B&W line drawings) Hurston's second published book, and her first collection of African-American folklore (the second, "Tell My Horse," would appear in 1938). She had actually been shopping the idea of a "story book," drawing from the material she'd gathered (under the patronage of Charlotte Osgood Mason) in small communities in Alabama and Florida from 1927 to 1931, to publishers for several years. However, it wasn't until the success of her first novel, "Jonah's Gourd Vine," in 1934, that she was able to raise any serious interest -- and even then, the publisher felt that the folklore material alone was not enough for an entire book, and persuaded Hurston to augment it with various other stories she had written, and a condensed version of an article on hoodoo that she'd published in an folklore journal in 1931. The book was not universally well-received by critics (even black critics) at the time, but is now regarded as a classic of African-Americana and one of its author's most valuable works. [PLEASE NOTE that the somewhat fragile dust jacket on this book has benefited from some modest internal repair and reinforcement -- NOT restoration -- by a professional conservator.] .
