Madman's Drum: A Novel in Woodcuts by Lynd Ward
Jonathan Cape and Harrison Smith October, 1930, New York - SIGNED. 118 images. Octavo [25 cm] Black cloth with illustrated paper labels on the front board and backstrip. Top edge gilt and fore edge deckled. Illustrated endsheets. Housed in a black slipcase. The book is in very good condition. The extremities are gently rubbed, soiled and faded. The spine is heavily faded, and subtly rolled. The title label on the spine has a very small loss from the bottom right corner. There is a small damp stain at the foot of the spine, and there is a 7 inch long light blue colored pencil mark on the front board. The boards are barely perceptibly concave. The illustrations are very slightly offset on the opposite pages, and the pages are lightly tanned. Despite the subtle tanning, the pages are actually quite clean and bright. The book is sturdy. The slipcase in fair condition only, with mild staining. The top edge is missing, and the underlying boards are exposed along the edges. There are numerous splits in the edges as well. Number 5 of 299 copies. Signed by the author/illustrator on the limitation page. Ward's second work is a visual tale of man's quest for power, and the inevitability of death. A masterpiece from one of the giants of twentieth century illustration. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
