Portrait of Louis James
1955. Crayon on paper, 290 x 200 mm., signed and dated lower right, fine, framed. This portrait is of the artist Louis James who was born in Adelaide in 1920 exhibited widely and by 1964 had held over 26 exhibitions in galleries both in Australia and the United Kingdom. He was awarded several prestigious awards and his work is held in state and regional galleries. The crayon portrait is by one of Australia's most highly regarded artists, Fred Williams, It is drawn in a most relaxed friendly manner, clearly the two artists knew one another and at this time we know that both James and Williams were in London, Fred Williams as a pupil at the Chelsea Art School. A lively portrait from the very early days of Williams's remarkable artistic career and in fine original condition.
