Marbled Podargus (Podargus Marmoratus)
London: The Author, 1869. Hand-coloured lithograph (540 x 355 mm.), with letter-press text; very good. An attractive image of the marbled frogmouth found in the Cape York Peninsula, specimens were supplied to Gould by MacGillivray in 1849 when he was in North East Australia. This is an original hand coloured lithographic plate from the Supplement of Gould's most famous work, Birds of Australia, The Supplement of 81 birds was added between 1851 and 1869. Only 250 sets were produced of Birds of Australia, and are still considered today as one of Gould's most successful projects and a foundation stone of Australian ornithology.
