Wrappers lightly sunned and smudged, light use at edges, tiny chips at crown and toe of spine, otherwise a very good copy. Bookplate of Byron Price. Linen wrappers and cloth covered slipcase. First edition. A presentation copy, inscribed by Holmes in the upper corner of the upper wrapper: "Theophilus Parsons Esq With the Author's Respects." Currier and Tilton report the first printing consisted of 1500 copies, a significant portion of which were bound up as the "Second edition." The recipient, Theophilus Parsons, Jr. (1797-1882), served as Professor of Law at Harvard from 1848 to 1870. In addition to his legal publications, he wrote in support of Swedenborgian doctrines.
