Lettres de Milady Wortlay Montagute
London - Chez Louis Chambeau, 1764. London - Chez Louis Chambeau, 1764 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A French copy of the letters of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu. The first French edition is translated from the English edition of 1763. Lady Mary Wortley Montagu (15 May 1689 21 August 1762) was an English aristocrat and writer. Montagu is today chiefly remembered for her letters, particularly her letters from Turkey, as wife to the British ambassador, which have been described by Billie Melman as the very first example of a secular work by a woman about the Muslim Orient. Condition: In a quarter calf leather binding with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, a trifle rubbed. Corners are worn and bumped and spine is chipped. Internally, generally firmly bound. Hinges are starting but firm. Pages are generally bright and clean with some scattered light foxing and age-toning. There is a bookplate to the front pastedown. Overall: GOOD..
