Ask Mamma; Or, The Richest Commoner in England is a humorousnovel by Robert Smith Surtees, illustrated with twelve coloured engravings by John Leech and numerous engravings on wood integrated with text. First edition. The preface states 'It may be a recommendation to the lover of light literature to be told, that the following story does not involved the complication of a plot. It is a mere continuous narrative of an almost every day exaggeration, interspersed with sporting scenes and excellent illustrations by Leech. 'Robert Smith Surtees (1805 - 1864) was an English editor, novelist and sporting writer. John Leech (1817 - 1864) was an English caricaturist and illustrator. Condition: In a half calf binding with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, generally smart but with some wear to extremities and rubbing to boards. Front hinge failed, rear strained. Internally, text block generally firmly bound but with the odd page starting. Bright but with occasional scattered spotting, slight foxing to plates and surrounding pages with slight offsetting. Overall: GOOD ONLY.
