THIRD EDITION 1780, 4to, approximately 285 x 225 mm, 11¼ x 8¾ inches, engraved portrait frontispiece by Mierevelt, pages: [4], lxx, 510, [24], finely bound in full red crushed morocco, triple gilt ruled border plus narrow gilt edge roll, gilt raised bands and richly gilt in compartments, gilt lettered black morocco label, all edges gilt, elaborate gilt inner dentelles (turn ins), marbled endpapers. A couple of minor marks to covers, a touch of rubbing to head and tail of spine, very slight rubbing to tail of upper hinge, tiny crack at top of upper hinge, small armorial bookplate of William Carr pasted over another on front pastedown, slight offsetting from title page onto margins of portrait, small British Museum duplicate stamp on verso title page and on final page, loss of 2 words on 2 facing pages of the Preface due to adhesion. A very good clean tight copy in an attracive binding. First published in 1757, reprinted in 1775. Sir Dudley Carleton (1574-1632) diplomat and politician, raised to the peerage in 1626 as Baron Carleton of Imbercourt, he became Viscount Dorchester in 1628 for his services to King and country. In the same year he was appointed Secretary of State. See Sabin, Dictionary of Books Relating to America 10901, and Lowndes Bibliographer's Manual, both state that the third edition is the best edition.
