Suburbia
San Francisco: Straight Arrow Books 1973 - 4to (252 × 252 mm), pp.[108]. 128 black-and-white photographs. Design by Jan Goodchild. Photo-illustrated wrappers: light rubbing and crease to lower side at corner, text on spine discoloured, reading crease and two small chips to spine. Inside of wrappers lightly toned at edges, bookseller's ticket to inside of front wrapper. Laid in is a note on brown paper headed with an ornate gilt 'Shit' logo: 'Patty - / I'm at the / Palm Grill - / Come By. / Love, / Bill.' A very good copy. First edition with a note. In 1968 Owens started working as a photographer for the Livermore Independent, a local newspaper for the Livermore Amador Valley, a suburb of San Francisco. This brought him into daily contact with hundreds of suburban families; his status as a member of this community enabled him to make photographs which did not pass judgement on his subjects, but allowed them to speak for themselves. Beneath many of the photographs are quotes by them. Many are proud home-owners surrounded by objects demonstrating their material success. 'We enjoy having these things' state a couple sitting in front of a full garage. Elsewhere, a group of three young men holding rifles declare, 'It's hard to hunt because you're always trespassing all the housing developments which are taking over the open fields. Since there are more people and more houses, the game is moving further out.' The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century pp.224-5; The Open Book pp.296-7; The Photobook: A History vol.II p.24 [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
