London, Jacob Tonson, 1709.. circa 29,5 x 24 cm. With 3 engraved portraits, several engraved vignettes, together about 1400 pages Contemporary full calf with gilt spine. Brunet V, 39; Tchemerzine V, 601: "(l edition) la plus recherchee de cet auteur". Second, enlarged and corrected edition with now some added comments and a biography of the essayist, philosopher and literary critic Charles de Saint-Evremont (1614-1703), who after being exiled by the young Louis XIV in 1661, spent most of the rest of his life in England, where he is buried in Poets' Corner, Westminster. His work was left to be published posthumously from his manuscripts by his friends P. Silvestre, the author of the preface and Pierre des Maizeaux, who wrote the biography. The portrait by Gunst after Parmentier is repeated as a frontispiece to all three parts. - The first edition appeared in 1705, this second improved and enlarged one is preferred by all bibliographers. - Endpaper with bookplate, title with small inscription and mended tear (no loss). Some browning, some spotting but mostly clean, binding rubbed, gilding to spine somewhat faded but still a decorative volume.
