Red cloth binding, gilt stamped title on cover. 23 plate illustrations depicting important persons and landmarks. Also interspersed with both tinted and black & white advertisement plates depicting Hawaii-based companies such as Hawaiian Electric, Oahu Railway and Land Co., Castle & Cooke Hardware, and many others. Pinned to the List of Illustrations page is a newspaper clipping about the Hawaiian Annexation, dated Feb. 12, no year. Condition: NEAR FINE. Cover is nearly flawless, slight bending at corners, very little shelf wear. Inside front end page bears an inscription from original owner, dated Dec 22, 1896.Opposite page is torn, nearly detached. Attached to it is a slip of paper in Russian, dated August 26, 1886, partially translated into English in pencil by original owner. Inside in excellent condition; a few pages slightly worn at corners, but all crisp, clean and bright. Binding is tight. --- William DeWitt Alexander (April 2, 1833?February 21, 1913) was an educator, author and linguist in the Kingdom of Hawaii and Republic of Hawaii.
