'The Cottage Library' Milner and Sowerby; Halifax: 1860 - John Lloyd Stephens, was born in Shrewsbury, New Jersey in 1805. He travelled to Egypt and Levant in 1834 - 1836 writing his travelogue after his return to the USA. He later travelled to British Honduras in the company of Architect and Draughtsman Frederick Catherwood, discovering the Mayan ruins at Copan in the process. In this single pocket sized edition: 13cm x 9cm he produces a narrative of everyday incidents that occur to a traveller in the East. Passing scenes of the faded and worn-out kingdoms of the Old World and explaining their relevance to the uninitiated. In 1846 he was responsible for the introduction and adoption of a conciliation court at the State Convention of New York for the revision of the Constitution. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
