St John's Square, London: E and J Wright, 1807 In brown half leather with marbled boards, tips have been replaced, blind tooling to edges, wear to edges and along joints. Spine has been relaid, keeping the ink and gilt tooling, title in gilt to recent leather label. Internally, reddish endpapers, has bookplate to fep, lacks all before A3 (BI intro, frontis, titlepage and the Epistle Dedicatorie - all suplied loose in facsimile), A3, 2p Ben Johnson dedication, 1 p Hugh Holland dedication, 1p Catalogue, 1p dedication, 1p Works and Names of the Principall Actors, 1-30 Comedies. 1-232 Histories. + 29p Troyus & Cressida. 1-399 (993) Tragedies, various errors in pagination, very clean, tight with wide borders, folio, 37.5*23cm, printed on Whatman paper which is stamped 1806, Whatman, & Shakespeare (the mill at Springfield, Maidstone, was being operated by William Balston who took over the copyright in 1806). This was the first facsimile edition of the first Shakespeare Folio, containing 36 plays. (Troylus and Cressida are not listed in the contents page but was inserted between the Histories and Tragedies. Two columns within a lined box per page. A lovely copy, clean and crisp. (COPAC lists at least 6 copies)
