THE NEW BOOK OF MARTYRS: OR, COMPLETE CHRISTIAN MARTYROLOGY . CONTAINING A FULL, AMPLE, CORRECT AUTHENTIC AND GENUINE HISTORICAL ACCOUNT OF THE MANY DREADFUL PERSECUTIONS AGAINST THE CHURCH OF CHRIST, IN ALL PARTS OF THE WORLD, BY PAGANS, JEWS, TURKS, PAPISTS, AND OTHERS .
Printed for J. Cooke, No. 17, in Pater-Noster- Row, London 1785 - iv,5-466,[8]pp. Folio. Contemporary calf, gilt. Illustrated with 44 engraved plates (including the frontispiece). Boards detached, subscribers list bound out of sequence at end, a few small marginal nicks or light smudges, occasional foxing and a few marginal spots, upper margin of one plate stained, along with the upper fore-corner of another, and there's a narrow smear across the face of another, but an internally about good copy, with the majority of the plates very good or better. One of several variations upon this work published under Cooke's imprint, which, according to ESTC, was first published in parts in beginning in 1765, and from that format, reissued in book form with cancel titles. A note in ESTC assigned to one of the variants approximating the copy in hand reports Cooke's place of business was at the above address between 1783 and 1792; the present copy is the variant without 'at' preceding No. 17 in the imprint. It is possible that this work is actually by the miscellaneous writer and biographer Robert Sanders (ca. 1727 - 1783), who paid Southwell to attach his name to his work, THE UNIVERSAL FAMILY BIBLE, first issued in parts, and then in two volumes in 1773. This work is an amplification of Fox, updated to include events of the 17th and 18th centuries, with additional attention paid to Ireland, Scotland and the Americas. The engravings are signed as the work of Dodd, Stothard, and others, and like those executed for Foxe in the preceding centuries, may have been calculated as much for their sensationalism as for any potential for spiritual edification. The list of directions to the binder calls for only 40 plates. ESTC N50750.
