Emily Carr in Her Studio, with the Painting 'sunshine and Tumult' Behind Her
[circa 1939]. (Photograph) Very good. 9.5" X 7.5". (24.2 X 19 cm). B / W Photograph on heavy textured stock. Pinholes in margins and minor old stress mark on lower right hand corner, not affecting the signature. With the photograph comes a signed copy, in fine condition, of Doris Shadbolt's 'The Art of Emily Carr' (1979) in which the image is used as a frontispiece. Inscribed probably in Carr's hand on the verso "Emily Carr print from a photograph taken by Mortimer Lamb". Additionally signed "Sincerely Emily Carr" on image. This well known image of the Canadian artist has been reproduced in many publications including being used as the frontispiece in Shadbolt's 'The Art of Emily Carr' (1979). The out-of-focus charactor of the print (enhanced by the textured paper it has been printed upon) seems to be intentional, as the Library and Archives Canada negative for the print shows the same fuzzy atmosphere. Sophie Pemberton introduced Mortimer Lamb (1872-1970), who was an engineer as well as an artist, to Carr in 1918. Enthusiastic about Carr's work Mortimer Lamb is known to have written to the Director of the National Gallery of Canada, Eric Brown, about her. A print of the photograph, and the negative, were sent by Mortimer Lamb in 1945 to the National Gallery to be used in an exhibition of Carr's work. Carr's studio and painting 'Sunshine and Tumult' are visible in the background of the image. The unsigned print of the image and negative that were shown at the National Gallery sold at Heffel's Auction house in 2006 for over 5000.00 dollars. Photography by Harold Mortimer Lamb. Signed by Emily Carr..
