London: W. Kent (Late D. Bogue) & Frederick Arnold, 1860 & 1863. First editions. Hardcover. Three quarter maroon morocco and marbled boards with matching marbled endpapers. Very good/No Dust Jacket. Cruikshank, George. 44 & 48 pages respectively. 25 x 16 cm. Both volumes illustrated: eight and nine woodcuts respectively. The first title "Pop-Gun," a signed presentation copy [in his florid hand, ending with an inimitable curlicue dripping from the last letter of his name] to J. F. Streatfield, Esq. [John Fremlyn Streatfield] "with the best regards, Feb. 20th 1860: " With armorial bookplate of latter on front pastedown. Napier's publication, HISTORY OF THE PENINSULAR WAR: "the excitement which followed the appearance of each volume is proved by the innumerable pamphlets issued by those who believe themselves to be attacked:" in this instance Cruikshank defends the British Volunteers. In the second title Cruikshank takes dead aim: "Questionable! --ay; so very questionable, in my opinion, is the fact of their coming at all, that I am now going to question whether they ever did, or can come." COHN 186. [Pop-Gun] With the "cut on p. 38, omitted in subsequent issues." COHN 209. Original blue wrappers bound-in, without rear wrapper of first title. interior contents fresh and clean.
