The Experienced English Housekeeper, for the use and ease of ladies, housekeepers, cooks, etc. Written purely from practice; dedicated to the Hon. Lady Elizabeth Warburton, whom the author lately served as housekeeper. Consisting of several hundred original receipts, most of which never appeared in print. A new edition. In which are inserted some celebrated receipts by other modern authors.
London: printed for A. Millar, W. Law, and R. Cater, 1793 - Octavo (219 x 125 mm). Contemporary marbled calf, rebacked, black label, spine gilt to compartments. A few instances of foxing and small worm hole at foot of final couple of signatures, not affecting text. An attractive, internally clean copy. Engraved portrait frontispiece and 3 plates, of which 2 are folding. A later edition of this popular Georgian-era cookery book, first published in Manchester in 1769; there were some twenty further editions before the turn of the 19th century, of which only twelve were authorised. Elizabeth Raffald (1733–1781) was born in Doncaster and spent some fifteen years in the service of Lady Elizabeth Warburton at Arley Hall, Cheshire, before marrying her employer's gardener. "A shrewd, tactful, and strong-willed woman, with a good knowledge of French and an active concern for the poor" (ODNB), she later opened her own shop in Manchester, first in Fennell Street, then on Exchange Alley, from where she ran a cookery school and probably the city's first register office for servants. When Baldwin, the London-based publisher of the first edition, suggested altering certain northern expressions in her work, Raffald is meant to have replied, "What I have written I proposed to write at the time; it was written deliberately, and I cannot admit to any alteration". Loosely inserted in this copy is a contemporary manuscript recipe to make elderberry wine, pleasing evidence of the book being used. Bitting p. 387 for the second edition; Cagle 944-953 for various other editions; ESTC T195825.
