Vida que el el Siervo de Dios Gregorio Lopez hizo en algunos Lugares de la Nueva Espana, principalmente en el pueblo de Santa Fe
1648 - Early missionary work in New Spain. 1648. Madrid. Francisco Nieto. In 4to (207 mm x 145 mm). 8 ff. + portrait + 114 ff. + 2 ff. Contemporary vellum, soiled, endpapers made of waste. Browned throughout, expected for the paper used, some damp staining, wide margins, unsophisticated copy. Fourth edition. The first is virtually unobtainable, printed in 1613 in Mexico. Lopez (1542 – 1596) was a Spanish missionary and something of a mystery; he travelled to Mexico in 1562, making port at Veracruz at the age of twenty. Shortly after arriving, he left for Mexico City, where he worked for a while before completing his plans to travel to the Zacatecas region and live amongst the Chichimecos Indians. He became a hermit and spent his life amongst Mexican natives in different regions, under suspicion of heresy, apparently not attending Masses and religious services. Overall, Lopez’ experiences become one of the earliest accounts of missionary work in New Spain. Little is known, and much is speculated regarding his early life in Spain, some saying he was a member of the nobility, “one of the most successful of the many early missionaries among the Indians, of New Spain, was born at Madrid, July 4th 1542, and is said to have been an illegitimate son of Charles V. or Philip II. At the age of twenty he landed at Vera Cruz, and soon after pitched his tent alone among the Chichimecos Indians. He died on the 20th of July, 1596, at Santa Fé, six miles from Mexico city, where he had been visited in his hermitage by all distinguished visitors to Mexico.” (Maggs, 1922, 139). Losa’s account of Lopez’ life arose considerable interest, with the work being reprinted several times in the 17th and 18th century centuries; all editions are scarce. Provenance: last folio with ownership inscription “Soy de Pedro de Landa”. Palau, 142526. Sabin, 42576. Salva, 3465. Medina, 1120. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
