Attempts at Humour, Poetical and Physiognomical
London: For the author, by B. Crosby and Co., sold by Chappel and Roberts, 1803. First Edition. Wraps, with Slipcase. Very Good. 4to. 27 pp. With eight hand-colored caricature plates. Scarce, with only five copies turning up on OCLC. The caricatures vividly capture expression, and it is this that jumps off the pages. Otherwise, they are somewhat crude and broad, even compared to other work by Woodward. But the verse was also presumably by Woodward, and reading the comic poems alongside will intensify the appreciation of the illustrations, which are vivid and sheer fun, if anything. Light foxing scattered, mostly on tissue guards. Wear to slipcase, which remains structurally sound.
